Archaeomancer's Map

{2}{W}

Artifact

LegalRank #788

When this artifact enters, search your library for up to two basic Plains cards, reveal them, put them into your hand, then shuffle.

Whenever a land an opponent controls enters, if that player controls more lands than you, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield.

Why is this card good?

Archaeomancer's Map is one of white's best ramp pieces, quietly solving two of mono-white's biggest weaknesses: card disadvantage and slow mana. The ETB alone nets you two Plains to hand, so it never really costs you cards — it's effectively a cantripping rock that replaces itself. Then the second ability turns the format's tendency toward land-heavy ramp decks against your opponents: in a four-player game, someone is almost always ahead of you on lands, so you'll be dropping free lands from hand nearly every turn. Catch-up ramp that scales with the table. Who wants it: Any white-heavy or mono-white deck that struggles to keep pace — landfall payoffs (Felidar Retreat, Emeria), big mana strategies, and Group Slug/voltron commanders that need consistent land drops. Combos beautifully with extra-land payoffs. When to skip it: If your deck runs few lands in hand or is a fast, low-land aggro/spellslinger build, the second ability whiffs. Also weaker in 1v1 or when you're the ramp leader yourself.
