Why is this card good?
Bitterblossom is one of the best token engines in black, generating a flying body every turn off a two-mana investment with zero further input. The compounding value is enormous in a 40-life format where losing 1 per turn is trivial.
It shines in:
- Aristocrats — endless fodder for Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and sacrifice outlets.
- Tokens/go-wide — anthem and overrun targets; faeries fly, so they connect.
- Faerie tribal (Alela, Tegwyll, Oona) — obvious synergy, and the evasive bodies enable commander damage or tempo plans.
- Combo decks needing free, repeatable bodies (Skullclamp draws, ritual sacrifice loops).
The life loss matters in two spots: aggressive multiplayer pods where you're a target, and lifegain-hate or burn-heavy tables. Over a long game it can quietly drain you, so pair it with a sac outlet or lifegain if your meta grinds.
Don't run it in spellslinger, voltron-without-faeries, or any deck that doesn't actually use the tokens — a 1/1 a turn isn't worth a card slot if you're not converting them into advantage.
