Culling the Weak

{B}

Instant

LegalRampRank #575

As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature.

Add {B}{B}{B}{B}.

Why is this card good?

Culling the Weak is a ritual that turns a creature into a massive mana burst — pay {B}, sacrifice a creature, get {B}{B}{B}{B}. That's net positive on mana, and crucially it generates black mana, which fuels the kinds of explosive plays this card exists for. This is almost exclusively a combo card. It shines in decks looking to chain into something game-ending: think Najeela, Tasigur, Sidisi, or any cEDH-leaning black deck that wants to ramp into tutors, big X-spells, or combo pieces. It's especially nasty when you sacrifice a creature that wants to die — aristocrats payoffs, undying/persist creatures, or a token you generated for free. Skip it in fair, grindy decks. The card is dead without a creature to fritz, and sacrificing a real creature for ramp is usually a losing trade unless it's enabling a win that turn. If you're not assembling combos or exploiting death triggers, you're just two-for-oneing yourself.

    You must sacrifice exactly one creature to cast this spell; you cannot cast it without sacrificing a creature, and you cannot sacrifice additional creatures.

    Players can only respond once this spell has been cast and all its costs have been paid. No one can try to destroy the creature you sacrificed to prevent you from casting this spell.
