Dig Through Time

Look at the top seven cards of your library. Put two of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Why is this card good?

Dig Through Time is one of the best card-selection spells in blue, and Delve is the reason why. Looking at seven and keeping two is already strong, but the real appeal is paying {U}{U} plus a few exiled cards instead of eight mana. In any deck that fills its graveyard — control, spellslinger, midrange combo — you'll routinely cast this for two or three mana, digging for the exact answer or combo piece you need at instant speed. Who wants it: Mono-blue and Dimir/Izzet control, storm/spellslinger decks, and any combo deck hunting a specific piece. It's a tutor-adjacent effect that scales with your self-mill and cantrips. Pairs beautifully with cheap spells that stock your yard. When to skip it: Decks that lean on graveyard recursion or reanimation hate exiling fuel — Delve actively fights those strategies. Also avoid it in low-spell-count, creature-heavy decks where your graveyard stays empty; then it's just an overpriced eight-mana dig. Don't run it alongside heavy Tasigur/Murktide competition for the same yard.

Because delve isn't an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs, such as flashback. It can also be used to pay for additional costs that include generic mana.

  • 2021-03-19

Delve doesn't change a spell's mana cost or mana value. For example, Treasure Cruise's mana value is 8 even if you exiled three cards to cast it.

  • 2021-03-19

You can exile cards to pay only for generic mana, and you can't exile more cards than the generic mana requirement of a spell with delve. For example, you can't exile more than seven cards from your graveyard to cast Treasure Cruise unless an effect has increased its cost.
