Why is this card good?
Expedition Map is a colorless land tutor that fits in literally any deck, which is why it's so ubiquitous. For just 3 total mana spread across two turns, it grabs any land — and that flexibility is what makes it great.
The real payoff is finding specific nonbasic lands:
- Combo/value decks that need a key land like Cabal Coffers, Gaea's Cradle, or Maze of Ith.
- Landfall and land-focused decks (Lord Windgrace, Omnath) where any land trigger matters and the artifact later feeds recursion.
- Stax/control fetching Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle, or a needed manland.
- Colorless-heavy decks (Eldrazi, Karn) that want Eye of Ugin or specific utility lands.
It also fixes colors in greedy multicolor manabases when you lack green ramp.
When to skip it: decks that don't run impactful nonbasics gain little — you're spending 3 mana and two turns just to get a tapped basic. If your manabase is all generic, it's too slow. It shines only when there's a target worth tutoring for.
