Field of the Dead

Land

LegalGame Changer Salt 1.47Rank #448

This land enters tapped.

{T}: Add {C}.

Whenever this land or another land you control enters, if you control seven or more lands with different names, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.

Why is this card good?

Field of the Dead turns your land drops into a recurring army, and in Commander—where games go long and you naturally hit huge land counts—the seven-different-names condition is almost trivial to satisfy. Once online, every fetch, every land off a ramp spell, even multiple lands per turn, each spits out a 2/2 Zombie. It snowballs hard. Where it shines: - Landfall / lands-matter decks (Lord Windgrace, Omnath, Tatyova) that play lots of lands and extra land drops. - Token/aristocrats shells that want bodies to sacrifice or go wide with anthems. - Grindy midrange that needs an inevitable, mana-free win condition. The key deckbuilding tax: minimize basic-land duplicates. Run snow basics or singleton-heavy manabases, and lean on fetches/utility lands to maximize unique names. Skip it if you run many duplicate basics, play a fast combo or low-land-count deck, or want early action—it enters tapped and does nothing relevant until you've built up. It's a Game Changer for a reason: in the right deck, it's an engine; in the wrong one, it's a tapped wasteland.

Field of the Dead's last ability counts itself and the land entering the battlefield in addition to whichever other lands you control.

  • 2019-07-12

If you control multiple lands with the same name, only one of those lands will count toward the seven or more required to create a Zombie. For example, if you control four lands named Plains, two named Island, and one named Field of the Dead, you control three lands with different names.

  • 2019-07-12

If multiple lands enter the battlefield simultaneously, possibly including Field of the Dead itself, all of those lands are counted. For example, if you sacrifice eight lands while resolving Scapeshift and search your library for five different basic land cards, two Field of the Dead cards, and one other land card with a different name, you'll create sixteen Zombie tokens.
