Why is this card good?
The premier free counterspell in Commander, and one of the best blue cards in the format. The free cast condition — controlling a commander — is trivially met in most games, turning this into a no-mana-down answer to removal, board wipes, combo pieces, and counter wars.
The power is in tempo and protection without losing your turn. You hold up interaction "for free" while still advancing your own plan, deploying threats and casting spells with no mana held back. That's enormous in cEDH and high-power tables, where the ability to protect a combo or stop an opponent's combo without tapping out decides games.
Wants: any blue deck running a relevant commander — combo, spellslinger, control, Tymna/Thrasios piles, anything cEDH-adjacent. It's nearly auto-include in serious blue decks.
When to skip: it's a Game Changer for a reason. Lower-bracket/casual pods may find free counterspells unfun and feel-bad. Also weaker in colorless or hard-to-protect commander decks, though it still hits noncreature spells fine.
