Geier Reach Sanitarium

Legendary Land

LegalRank #429

{T}: Add {C}.

{2}, {T}: Each player draws a card, then discards a card.

Why is this card good?

Geier Reach Sanitarium is a colorless land that quietly enables several niche strategies through symmetrical, repeatable card filtering. The key word is symmetrical — everyone draws and discards. On the surface that's neutral, but it shines in decks built to exploit the discard or the draw: - Wheels/discard payoffs: Feeds creatures that punish discarding (Waste Not, Nekusar, Sheoldred). The forced discard also fills graveyards for reanimator or Underworld Breach lines. - "No one can draw" lockdowns: With Notion Thief, Narset, or Hullbreaker Horror, you steal everyone's draw while they still discard — brutal asymmetry. - Smoothing colorless/Eldrazi decks: Kozilek, Emrakul, and other big-mana shells appreciate a land that loots toward bombs. When NOT to play it: In any deck without a payoff, you're just handing opponents free filtering — and gifting graveyard fuel to reanimator decks at the table is dangerous. It also taps for colorless only, which strains greedy mana bases. Run it when you can break the symmetry, not as generic value.

When you activate Geier Reach Sanitarium's last ability, first each player draws a card. Then the player whose turn it is selects a card from their hand and sets it aside without revealing it; proceeding in turn order, each other player does the same. Then the cards that were set aside are discarded at once.

If more than one player discards a card with madness simultaneously, the player whose turn it is puts their madness abilities onto the stack first, then each other player does the same in turn order. The last one put onto the stack resolves first, and a spell cast this way will resolve before resolving the next madness ability.
