Why is this card good?

Gilded Goose is a one-drop mana dork that fixes for any color, which sets it apart from Llanowar Elves and friends. The catch: you need Food to tap it, and after the ETB Food you have to pay {1}{G} to make more. That makes it slightly clunkier than a pure dork, but the flexibility and synergy upside are real. It shines in two homes. First, any deck that already cares about Food or sacrifice — Korvold, Prosper, aristocrats, and Food-matters builds (Trostani-style lifegain, anything with Cauldron Familiar / Witch's Oven). There the Goose pulls double duty as fixing and fuel. Second, five-color or heavily splashed green decks wanting cheap any-color ramp early. Don't play it as a generic mana creature in a mono-green or two-color ramp deck — Elves, Birds of Paradise, or Ignoble Hierarch fix or accelerate more reliably without needing Food upkeep. It's a synergy card first, a ramp card second. If your deck doesn't reward the Food, run a cleaner accelerant.

If an effect refers to a Food, it means any Food artifact, not just a Food artifact token. For example, you can sacrifice Tough Cookie (an Artifact Creature — Food Golem) to activate Maraleaf Rider's ability (an ability with "Sacrifice a Food" in its cost).

  • 2024-11-08

You can't sacrifice a Food to pay multiple costs. For example, you can't sacrifice a Food token to activate its own ability and also to activate Maraleaf Rider's ability.

Whatever you do, don't eat the delicious cards.

Food is an artifact type. Even though it appears on some creatures, it's never a creature type.
