Why is this card good?
Great Furnace is a land that's also an artifact, and that dual identity is the entire point. As a basic-ish Mountain replacement it does nothing special, but in the right shell it quietly enables a surprising amount.
Where it shines:
- Affinity/artifact-matters decks — it counts toward your artifact count for things like affinity, metalcraft, and Urza-style synergies without costing a real card slot.
- Artifact recursion/sacrifice — works with Goblin Welder, Daretti, and Trash for Treasure as a cheap target to throw away and bring back. It's also fodder for Krark-Clan Ironworks-style sac loops.
- Improvise/treasure-adjacent ramp shells that want artifact density.
The catch: it's a non-basic that dies to artifact removal and land destruction, so it's strictly more fragile than a Mountain. Shatter, Vandalblast, and Bane of Progress all hit it. In a deck with zero artifact synergy, you're just adding a downside for no benefit.
Only run it when you're actively counting artifacts — otherwise play a Mountain.
