Why is this card good?

Incubation Druid is a premium mana dork that scales hard. Out of the gate it's a turn-two Llanowar Elves that fixes for any color your lands produce — already solid in two- or three-color green decks. But the real payoff is the +1/+1 counter: with one on it, you tap for three mana, making it a one-card ramp explosion comparable to a Gilded Lotus on a creature. You don't need its own clunky Adapt cost. Any external counter source — Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Cathars' Crusade, a simple Inspiring Call deck, or proliferate effects — instantly upgrades it. It's an all-star in +1/+1 counter decks (Ezuri, Vorel, Pir/Toothy, Ghave) and any big-mana green ramp shell wanting to cast expensive bombs early. Skip it if your deck has no counter synergies and runs heavy boardwipes — as a fragile creature dork it dies to everything, and without a counter it's just a worse Elvish Mystic. It shines where you can reliably buff it.

The types of mana are white, blue, black, red, green, and colorless.

Incubation Druid checks the effects of all mana-producing abilities of lands you control, but it doesn't check their costs or legality. For example, Spire of Industry says "{T}, Pay 1 life: Add one mana of any color. Activate only if you control an artifact." If you control Spire of Industry and Incubation Druid, you can tap Incubation Druid for any color of mana. It doesn't matter whether you control an artifact, whether you can pay 1 life, or whether Spire of Industry is untapped.

Any change to a land's type or abilities gained by a land can affect the types of mana a land can produce.

  • 2019-01-25

Incubation Druid doesn't care about any restrictions or riders your lands put on the mana they produce, such as those of Unclaimed Territory and Guildmages' Forum. It just produces one mana of the appropriate type, with no restrictions or riders.
