Kodama of the West Tree

{2}{G}

Legendary Creature — Spirit

LegalRampRank #818

Reach

Modified creatures you control have trample. (Equipment, Auras you control, and counters are modifications.)

Whenever a modified creature you control deals combat damage to a player, search your library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Why is this card good?

Kodama of the West Tree is a +1/+1 counter payoff that doubles as a ramp engine. At {2}{G} for a 3-drop, it's cheap and immediately impactful in the right shell. The trample is the key enabler — modified creatures punch through chump blockers, and every one that connects fetches a basic land tapped. With wide counter-based boards, that's potentially several lands per combat, accelerating you well past curve and thinning your deck. Who wants it: +1/+1 counter decks (Ghave, Hamza, Pir & Toothy), Equipment/Voltron builds, and anything with cheap modifications. It shines in go-wide counters strategies where many small creatures each connect for land after land. Pairs beautifully with proliferate and anthem-style counter generators. Skip it if: your deck isn't counter/Equipment/Aura focused — the abilities do nothing without modified creatures. It also relies on combat damage, so it's weak in defensive or control shells, and the ramp dries up if you can't push through blockers despite the trample.
