Mental Misstep

{U/P}

Instant

LegalCounterspellRank #451

({U/P} can be paid with either {U} or 2 life.)

Counter target spell with mana value 1.

Why is this card good?

Mental Misstep is a free counterspell that hits any 1-mana spell — and in Commander, those are everywhere. You're stopping Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Birds of Paradise, Mana Vault, Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Cyclonic Rift's setup pieces, and most importantly the cheap tutors and combo pieces (Demonic Consultation, Gitaxian Probe, Spellseeker, etc.) that high-power decks lean on. Because it costs 2 life via Phyrexian mana, any deck can run it — not just blue ones. That said, it shines most in cEDH and high-power blue control/combo decks where protecting a turn-one Sol Ring or stopping an opponent's fast mana is genuinely game-deciding. Don't play it in casual/precon-level pods. The format slows down, fewer impactful 1-drops get cast, and you'll frequently hold a dead card. Its value scales directly with table speed: brutal in cutthroat games, mediocre in battlecruiser ones. Run it as a free interaction piece when every point of tempo matters.

A card with Phyrexian mana symbols in its mana cost is each color that appears in that mana cost, regardless of how that cost may have been paid.

  • 2011-06-01

To calculate the mana value of a card with Phyrexian mana symbols in its cost, count each Phyrexian mana symbol as 1.

  • 2011-06-01

As you cast a spell or activate an activated ability with one or more Phyrexian mana symbols in its cost, you choose how to pay for each Phyrexian mana symbol at the same time you would choose modes or choose a value for X.

  • 2011-06-01

If you're at 1 life or less, you can't pay 2 life.

  • 2011-06-01

Phyrexian mana is not a new color. Players can't produce Phyrexian mana.

  • 2011-06-01

If a spell has {X} in its mana cost, X is considered to be the value chosen for it while that spell is on the stack.

  • 2011-06-01

Each Phyrexian mana symbol in a spell's mana cost contributes 1 to that spell's mana value. For example, Mental Misstep's mana value is 1, regardless of how its cost was paid.
