Unclaimed Territory

Land

LegalRank #243

As this land enters, choose a creature type.

{T}: Add {C}.

{T}: Add one mana of any color. Spend this mana only to cast a creature spell of the chosen type.

Why is this card good?

Unclaimed Territory is premium fixing for tribal decks, plain and simple. The magic is that it taps for any color as long as you're casting a creature of your chosen type — which means it fixes you perfectly regardless of how many colors your deck plays. This shines in heavily tribal lists: Slivers, Elves, Goblins, Dragons, Merfolk, Vampires, etc. In a multicolor Sliver or Dragon deck, it's effectively an untapped dual or even five-color land for your creatures. The colorless fallback ({C}) keeps it from being a dead draw when you need to pay generic costs or activate abilities. The downside: that flexible mana only casts creatures of the chosen type. It won't help cast your removal, ramp, board wipes, or off-type bombs. In decks with a lot of noncreature spells or scattered creature types, it's a liability — you'll find yourself with mana you can't use. Don't run it in non-tribal decks or where your creature base isn't unified. For dedicated tribal commanders, it's near-auto-include.

To choose a creature type, you must choose an existing creature type, such as Vampire or Knight. You can't choose multiple creature types, such as "Vampire Knight." Card types such as artifact can't be chosen, nor can subtypes that aren't creature types, such as Jace, Vehicle, or Treasure.
