Why is this card good?

Valley Floodcaller is a build-around engine for spellslinger decks that lean on creatures, particularly the "spells matter" + "tribal beatdown" crossover that Bloomburrow enabled. The untap clause is the real payoff. Every noncreature spell pumps and untaps your Birds/Frogs/Otters/Rats — meaning a creature like a prowess attacker can swing, then untap to block or attack again with vigilance-like effects. More importantly, it untaps mana-producing or tap-ability creatures, enabling explosive chains. Pair it with cheap cantrips and rituals and you can generate huge combat damage or loop tap effects in a turn. Wants it: Otter/typal spellslinger commanders like Ms. Bumbleflower or Mabel, or any heavy-instant/sorcery aggro deck running the right creature types. The flash-granting also smooths your curve and enables surprise plays. Skip it in decks without enough tribal bodies or noncreature density — it does almost nothing if you're not casting multiple spells per turn or lack the supported creature types. It's also fragile at 3 toughness and a removal magnet, so back it up.

Valley Floodcaller’s second ability applies to noncreature cards in any zone, provided something is allowing you to cast them. For example, you could cast a sorcery with flashback as though it had flash.

  • 2024-07-26

Valley Floodcaller’s second ability has no effect on abilities that you can activate “any time you could cast a sorcery.”
