BuildCard details

The Commander

When Aang enters, airbend another target creature. (Exile it. While it's exiled, its owner may cast it for {2} rather than its mana cost.)

Whenever one or more creatures you control leave the battlefield without dying, you get an experience counter.

At the beginning of your upkeep, create a 1/1 white Ally creature token for each experience counter you have.

Guide

Gameplan

Aang is a mono-white blink-and-tokens engine: repeatedly flicker, bounce, or phase out your own creatures so they leave the battlefield without dying, stacking experience counters that each turn the upkeep into a free army of 1/1 Allies. The ETB also tempo-blanks an opposing threat. You snowball board presence, then close with a wide team and anthems.

Strengths

  • Experience counters are permanent, so the token output only grows and survives single board wipes
  • Mono-white gives access to the best blink, anthem, and token support plus efficient interaction
  • ETB airbend is repeatable tempo that can re-buy your own ETB creatures or stall a key attacker
  • Goes wide quickly, making it strong with overrun-style finishers and tax-the-opponent effects

Weaknesses

  • Slow to come online—no experience counters means no tokens, so you need enablers in play
  • Spot removal or bounce on Aang resets the upkeep token trigger (counters persist but commander tax climbs)
  • Mono-white lacks card advantage and ramp, so it can run out of gas
  • Board wipes that exile or recur faster than you rebuild can undo the go-wide plan
  • Counters only matter if creatures leave 'without dying'—sacrifice and combat trades don't trigger it

Key Cards

  • Conjurer's Closet — End-step flicker reliably triggers an experience counter and re-uses Aang's airbend each turn.
  • Restoration Angel — Instant-speed blink protects creatures from removal while banking experience counters.
  • Eldrazi Displacer — Repeatable colorless-activated flicker is an experience-counter machine and removes attackers via airbend loops.
  • Intangible Virtue — Pumps every Ally token, turning the growing army into a real clock.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each upkeep token entering puts +1/+1 counters across the board, snowballing the wide army.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Cheap repeatable blink of two creatures fuels counters and reuses ETB value.
  • Teferi's Protection — Phasing out your whole board can leave creatures without dying and is premier mono-white protection.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize repeatable, instant-speed flicker (Eldrazi Displacer, Conjurer's Closet, Flickerwisp) and cheap protection so you reliably bank experience counters and shield Aang. Add anthem and counter payoffs (Intangible Virtue, Cathars' Crusade, Divine Visitation) plus white's best mana rocks and card draw (Smothering Tithe, Mind's Eye, Esper Sentinel) to offset the color's weaknesses. Top-end finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede convert the snowballing army into a single decisive swing.
