BuildCard details

The Commander

When Abdel Adrian enters, exile any number of other nonland permanents you control until Abdel Adrian leaves the battlefield. Create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token for each permanent exiled this way.

Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)

Guide

Gameplan

Abdel is a mono-white token engine that flickers your own nonland permanents to convert them into 1/1 Soldiers, then leverages a Background as a second commander to direct the strategy. You build a wide board, blink Abdel (or bounce/sacrifice and recast him) to exile high-impact permanents and reset their ETBs while banking armies of tokens, then close with anthems or aristocrats. Turn to turn you ramp into Abdel, deploy enchantments/artifacts/creatures with strong enters effects, and chain value off repeated flickers.

Strengths

  • Generates massive token armies cheaply, scaling with your existing board
  • Background slot adds flexibility and a second free-to-cast commander effect
  • Reuses powerful ETB permanents (Abdel re-blinks them when he leaves)
  • Mono-white gives access to the best token anthems, board wipes, and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Color-locked into white, so card draw and ramp are comparatively weak
  • Exiling your own permanents under Abdel is risky—removing him strands them temporarily
  • Token strategies fold to a single well-timed board wipe
  • Limited interaction outside of white removal staples

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns the flood of 1/1 Soldiers into a relentless card-draw engine in a draw-starved color.
  • Intangible Virtue — Anthem that immediately makes every Soldier token a real threat for going wide.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices tokens for mana and combos with recursion and aristocrats payoffs.
  • Esper Sentinel — Premier mono-white card advantage that keeps your hand full each turn.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every token Abdel and your other generators make.
  • Cloudshift — Cheaply blinks Abdel to retrigger his exile-and-token ability for value.

Upgrade Path

Pick a Background that matches your axis—Raised by Giants for Voltron, or a draw/aristocrats-leaning one for go-wide. Add efficient blink (Cloudshift, Eerie Interlude), token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak), and free sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar) to build resilient combo or drain finishes. Round out with mono-white staples Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, and a strong removal/wrath suite to survive to your payoff turns.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with Soldier tokens buffed by anthems like Intangible Virtue and Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and sacrifice outlets
  • ▸Equipment/Voltron beatdown enabled by a combat-oriented Background
  • ▸Combo loops with Ashnod's Altar plus recursion to generate infinite tokens or mana

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Abdel makes a Soldier per exiled permanent, snowballing wide boards with anthems.
  • Blink — Flickering Abdel and other ETB permanents loops value triggers and tokens.
  • Aristocrats — Endless 1/1 fodder feeds sacrifice outlets and drain effects.
  • Voltron — With an aggressive Background, Abdel can carry equipment while tokens protect him.
