BuildCard details

The Commander

Tap an untapped Octopus you control: Tap target permanent.

{U}{U}{U}: Tap all creatures without flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-blue tempo/control board around tapping down opponents' permanents, then leverage Aboshan's {U}{U}{U} mass-tap to lock out non-flyers while you stabilize with counters and card draw. You grind value with tappers and Cephalid synergies, untap your team repeatedly, and eventually pivot to a flyer-based or mill/combo finish since your own creatures stay safe by flying.

Strengths

  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and protection in the format.
  • The {U}{U}{U} ability creates a soft lock against ground-based aggro and creature decks while your flyers attack freely.
  • Tapper synergies stack: each untapped Octopus or tapper neutralizes a key blocker, ramp source, or mana rock.
  • Cheap commander cost relative to a six-drop's payoff if you can untap repeatedly.

Weaknesses

  • Aboshan is a slow, expensive 3/3 with no evasion or immediate impact; he dies to any removal and the deck stalls without him.
  • Mono-blue struggles to interact with resolved permanents and lacks efficient board wipes besides bounce.
  • The mass-tap costs heavy triple-blue and doesn't stop already-attacking creatures or instant-speed plays.
  • Octopus and Cephalid tribal support is thin, making the 'tribe' payoff inconsistent.
  • Vulnerable to flyers and noncreature-based combo decks that ignore the tap lock entirely.

Key Cards

  • Intruder Alarm — Untaps your tappers every time a creature enters, turning Aboshan and Octopuses into a repeatable lockdown engine.
  • Seedborn Muse — Untaps all your permanents each turn so you can tap down threats and hold up interaction every opponent's turn.
  • Opposition — Pairs perfectly with Aboshan's tappers and tokens to lock opponents out of attacking, blocking, and tapping mana.
  • Cryptolith Rite — Lets all your creatures tap for mana, but more importantly fuels token-based tapper armies and Opposition-style locks.
  • Kindred Discovery — Naming Octopus or your token type turns each ETB into massive card advantage to refuel the control plan.
  • Followed Footsteps — Copies a token-making body or key flyer each turn to build an evasive board that wins under your tap lock.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into the Opposition + Intruder Alarm + token-generator engine, which is the deck's most powerful soft lock, and add untap enablers like Seedborn Muse and Kiora's Follower. Improve interaction density with premium counters (Swan Song, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain) and fast mana rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Vault) so you reach Aboshan and your lock pieces earlier. To raise the ceiling, include a clean combo finish such as a mill outlet plus untap loop, since Aboshan's grind alone is slow against optimized tables.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Establish a tap-lock with Opposition or Aboshan's mass-tap, then chip in with unblocked flyers.
  • ▸Untap-engine value (Seedborn Muse/Intruder Alarm) grinds opponents out of resources until they can't act.
  • ▸Mill or commander-damage finish once the board is locked and opponents are tapped down.
  • ▸Big evasive token army built via copy effects swinging while the rest of the board stays tapped.

Archetypes

  • Tappers/Stax — Aboshan and a critical mass of tappers plus Opposition lock down opponents' lands and creatures.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and card draw protect Aboshan while the mass-tap blunts aggression.
  • Tokens — Token generators feed tap-down engines like Opposition and Intruder Alarm for repeatable control.
  • Tribal (Cephalid/Octopus) — Aboshan anchors a sea-creature theme using Octopus tappers and Cephalid mill payoffs.
