Admiral Beckett Brass

BuildCard details

The Commander

Other Pirates you control get +1/+1.

At the beginning of your end step, gain control of target nonland permanent controlled by a player who was dealt combat damage by three or more Pirates this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with Pirates, buff them with Beckett's anthem, and swing wide to both deal damage and steal opponents' best permanents at end step. You curve out cheap aggressive Pirates, build a wide board, and close games through combat damage and incremental theft that snowballs your advantage.

Strengths

  • Strong aggressive tribal synergy with a built-in anthem
  • Steal effect generates relentless card and board advantage
  • Grixis colors offer excellent removal, card draw, and evasion
  • Pirates have strong evasion and treasure-generating support

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; loses anthem and theft engine without Beckett
  • Board wipes devastate the go-wide strategy
  • Theft trigger requires connecting with three separate Pirates, awkward against blockers
  • Often draws removal as a known aggressive threat

Key Cards

  • Dockside Extortionist — Explosive treasure generation that ramps and snowballs your Pirate board.
  • Hostage Taker — Premium Pirate that exiles and steals a creature or artifact on entry.
  • Coastal Piracy — Turns evasive Pirate hits into a steady stream of cards.
  • Breeches, Brazen Plunderer — A go-wide Pirate payoff that converts combat damage into treasures and free spells.
  • Reflecting Pool — Fixes the demanding Grixis mana base alongside other duals.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient evasion granters like Coat of Arms and Door of Destinies to make the team lethal faster, and lean into treasure payoffs and extra combats (Aggravated Assault) to trigger theft multiple times. Tighten the mana base with fast lands, fetches, and signets, and include protection like Heroic Intervention to survive wraths.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide Pirate beatdown amplified by Beckett's +1/+1 anthem
  • ▸Stealing opponents' key permanents to dominate the board, then swinging
  • ▸Evasive damage with extra-combat enablers and overrun effects

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Beckett's anthem and cheap evasive Pirates push a wide, fast beatdown.
  • Theft/Control — The end-step steal trigger lets you commandeer opponents' best permanents repeatedly.
  • Treasure Ramp — Pirates synergize with treasures from Dockside, Breeches, and Marauding Looter to accelerate and refuel.
