BuildCard details

The Commander

Activated abilities of creatures you control cost {X} less to activate, where X is Agatha's power. This effect can't reduce the mana in that cost to less than one mana.

{4}{R}{G}: Other creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain trample and haste until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Agatha turns every activated ability into a bargain, reducing costs by her power (minimum one mana). Pump her power with +1/+1 counters so creature abilities become absurdly cheap, then chain activations to generate mana, draw, or combo. You grind value through repeatable abilities and close with overwhelming activated-ability engines or an overrun-style alpha strike.

Strengths

  • Massive cost reduction makes activated-ability creatures (mana dorks, untappers, pingers) extremely efficient
  • Scales explosively with +1/+1 counter support, snowballing into near-free abilities
  • Built-in anthem/overrun for a reliable creature finish
  • Low mana value (2) means she comes down early and starts saving mana immediately

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; abilities cost full price without Agatha on board
  • Vulnerable to spot removal and board wipes that reset your counter investment
  • She starts at 1 power, so reductions are small until you commit resources to grow her
  • Counter and equipment investment can fall apart to a single removal spell

Key Cards

  • Agatha's Soul Cauldron — Exiles dead creatures to grant their activated abilities, all discounted by Agatha's power, and feeds her counters.
  • The Ozolith — Banks counters when creatures die, letting you rebuild Agatha's power after removal and stack reductions.
  • Hardened Scales — Amplifies every counter you add, accelerating Agatha's power and your discount ceiling.
  • Ivy Lane Denizen — Repeatedly stacks +1/+1 counters onto Agatha each time a green creature enters, growing her cheaply.
  • Sword of the Animist — Equip-based ramp whose ability and equip cost shrink, ramping you each combat.
  • Walking Ballista — Discounted activations turn it into a cheap repeatable damage/removal engine and combo piece.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and counter doublers (Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) to spike Agatha's power immediately, and protect her with Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves, and Swiftfoot Boots. Lean into a dedicated infinite-mana combo (Devoted Druid-style untappers, Basalt Monolith with discounts) plus Walking Ballista to convert cheap activations into a clean kill. Tighten the mana base and add tutors like Stoneforge Mystic or Green Sun's Zenith to find your engine pieces consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite mana into Walking Ballista or a repeatable ability to deal lethal damage
  • ▸Overrun the table with her {4}{R}{G} anthem granting +1/+1, trample, and haste
  • ▸Snowball a huge Agatha plus counter creatures into commander-damage beatdown
  • ▸Grind value engines until a creature with a tap/activated ability overwhelms the board

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Growing Agatha's power both wins via counters and deepens her cost reduction, creating a feedback loop.
  • Combo — Cheap activated abilities enable infinite mana and damage loops with creatures like Walking Ballista or untap engines.
  • Voltron/Equipment — Equip and activated equipment costs shrink dramatically while pumping her power for bigger discounts.
  • Aggro/Stompy — Her anthem grants trample and haste for explosive, evasive alpha strikes.
