BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Agrus Kos attacks, attacking red creatures get +2/+0 and attacking white creatures get +0/+2 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Agrus Kos anchors a Boros aggro/go-wide deck that floods the board with red and white creatures, then swings with Agrus to pump the whole team — +2/+0 across red and +0/+2 across white — for explosive, wide attacks. You curve out cheap creatures and token-makers, attack relentlessly, and use combat tricks and extra-combat effects to push damage through.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable anytime-you-attack team pump that demands no mana
  • Boros has elite aggro support: anthems, extra combats, equipment, and go-wide payoffs
  • Low curve means you can come out of the gate fast and pressure the table early
  • Pumps your whole board, not just one creature, rewarding token strategies

Weaknesses

  • Five-mana commander that does nothing the turn it lands and only matters when attacking
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your entire investment in one card
  • No card advantage or recovery built in — runs out of gas against control
  • Boros lacks ramp and card draw compared to other color pairs
  • Relies on connecting in combat; fliers, deathtouch blockers, and fogs blunt it

Key Cards

  • Aurelia, the Warleader — Grants an extra combat step, letting Agrus pump and swing twice in a single turn.
  • Assemble the Legion — Generates an ever-growing army of tokens that Agrus's anthem turns lethal.
  • Skullclamp — Solves Boros's card-draw problem by cashing in small tokens and creatures for cards.
  • Iroas, God of Victory — Makes your attackers unblockable-style aggressors and protects them from chump-block punishment.
  • Smothering Tithe — Provides the ramp and resource engine Boros decks desperately need to rebuild and go wide.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets attackers deal damage then pull back safely, removing the risk from all-out swings.

Upgrade Path

Lean into ramp and card advantage to cover Boros's weaknesses — add Smothering Tithe, Dockside Extortionist, and Skullclamp so you don't run out of gas. Add extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Combat Celebration) and protective pieces (Reconnaissance, Iroas) to make attacks safe and lethal. Tighten the curve and add board-wipe insurance like Heroic Intervention or token-rebuilding engines so one Wrath doesn't end your game.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide board buffed by Agrus's attack trigger
  • ▸Extra combat steps (Aurelia, Combat Celebration) chaining multiple pumped swings
  • ▸Equipment-loaded beaters dealing commander damage or large hits
  • ▸Token swarm overwhelming blockers with anthems stacked on the Agrus pump

Archetypes

  • Go-Wide Tokens — Agrus's anthem pumps every red and white attacker, so the more bodies you field the harder he hits.
  • Boros Aggro — His attack trigger turns an aggressive curve of creatures into a fast, hard-hitting clock.
  • Voltron/Equipment — Stacked with equipment and the pump, a single creature can carry lethal commander or combat damage.
