The Commander

Flying

As Alhammarret enters, each opponent reveals their hand. You choose the name of a nonland card revealed this way.

Your opponents can't cast spells with the chosen name (as long as this creature is on the battlefield).

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Alhammarret to name a key card out of an opponent's hand (a counterspell, removal, or combo piece), then ride mono-blue control elements—counters, card draw, and evasive beaters—to grind the table down. He's a 4/4 flyer that doubles as a soft-lock and a strong attacker. You win slowly through card advantage and a few big evasive threats, or by assembling a blue combo.

Strengths

  • Acts as a targeted tax/lock that can blank a known combo piece, counterspell, or removal spell from a specific opponent
  • Evasive 4/4 flyer that pressures life totals and chips away over time
  • Mono-blue means consistent mana and access to the format's best counters and card draw
  • Naming reveals each opponent's whole hand, giving you full information for the rest of the turn cycle

Weaknesses

  • Seven mana for an effect that only stops one named card and only from the cards revealed at that moment
  • Dies easily to removal, instantly undoing the lock; he's a single point of failure
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and struggles against go-wide and resilient board states
  • The lock is only relevant against decks reliant on a single key card; spread-out threats slip through

Key Cards

  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier asymmetric board wipe to swing tempo and protect your lock piece.
  • Rhystic Study — Generates the card advantage engine that powers a slow blue control game.
  • Swan Song — Cheap, efficient protection for Alhammarret and your key spells.
  • Propaganda — Deters attacks on you while your fragile sphinx holds the lock together.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Lets you blink Alhammarret to re-name a card each turn as opponents draw new threats.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Repeatedly flicker Alhammarret to re-read hands and name fresh problem cards.

Upgrade Path

Add cheap flicker effects (Ephemerate, Thassa, Deadeye Navigator) so you can re-trigger the naming ability and keep blanking the most dangerous card in play. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crystal, Mana Vault) so you land Alhammarret early enough to matter, and lean into a compact win like a blue combo or Rift-into-flyers finish rather than passive control. Layer protection (Swan Song, Pact of Negation, Heroic Intervention substitutes like Slip Out the Back) since the lock collapses the moment he dies.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with Alhammarret and other evasive flyers under counter protection
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload into a lethal alpha strike
  • ▸Mono-blue infinite combos (e.g., Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal into an X mana sink)
  • ▸Grinding the table out with superior card advantage and a few resilient threats

Archetypes

  • Control — His tax effect plus mono-blue counters and card draw lets you dictate the game and protect a slow win.
  • Stax/Soft-Lock — Pairing his naming ability with flicker effects lets you repeatedly strip key cards, taxing the table.
  • Combo — Mono-blue can assemble compact combos while Alhammarret names opposing answers to clear the path.
  • Voltron/Tempo — As an evasive flyer, equipment and counter-backed beatdown can carry the game.
