BuildCard details

The Commander

+1: Draw a card, then put a card from your hand on top of your library.

−1: Exile another target permanent you own, then return it to the battlefield under your control.

−6: Choose left or right. Each player gains control of all nonland permanents other than Aminatou controlled by the next player in the chosen direction.

Aminatou, the Fateshifter can be your commander.

Guide

Gameplan

Aminatou is an Esper value engine that abuses her -1 to blink your own permanents for repeated enters-the-battlefield (ETB) effects, then loops it indefinitely with the right pieces. You stabilize early with removal and card advantage, ramp into a flicker engine, and grind opponents out of resources before assembling a deterministic combo. Her +1 smooths draws and stacks fateful top-of-library effects, while the ultimate is a political/win lever in long games.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable blink each turn with -1 that retriggers all your ETB creatures
  • Esper colors give the best removal, tutors, and card advantage in the format
  • Multiple compact infinite combos (Felidar Guardian, Saheeli, Cloudstone Curio loops)
  • +1 enables powerful topdeck manipulation with Sensei's Top, Brainstorm, miracles
  • Flexible power level: works in casual blink shells and cEDH-adjacent combo decks

Weaknesses

  • Planeswalker is fragile and a constant attack magnet from turn one
  • -1 only protects/loops one permanent at a time without combo support
  • Needs setup pieces to convert value into a closing line
  • Mana-hungry three-color manabase prone to color screw
  • Vulnerable to blink hate and counterspells disrupting key triggers

Key Cards

  • Felidar Guardian — Blinks Aminatou to reset her -1, the cornerstone of her infinite-flicker loops.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounce loops with ETB creatures generate infinite value and combo kills alongside her ability.
  • Sensei's Divining Top — Turns her +1 into card selection and combos with shuffle/draw engines.
  • Mystic Reflection — Pairs with her -1 to copy a creature onto any token, enabling clone-based combos.
  • Disciple of the Vault — Classic payoff that converts artifact loops into a direct life-loss win.
  • Teferi, Hero of Dominaria — Superfriends support that protects Aminatou and provides card advantage and a hard answer to threats.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, signets) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Mystical Tutor) to find combo pieces consistently. Tighten the win toward a compact two- or three-card loop—Felidar Guardian + Saheeli Rai, or Cloudstone Curio + cheap ETB creatures + a drain payoff—so you don't rely on raw value. Improve the manabase with shocks, fetches, and fast lands, and include interaction like Swords to Plowshares, Fierce Guardianship, and Force of Negation to protect the combo turn.

  • Azorius Guildgate
  • Army of the Damned
  • Boreas Charger
  • Dismal Backwater
  • Primordial Mist
  • Dimir Aqueduct
  • Dimir Guildgate
  • Crystal Ball

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite ETB loops (e.g., blink + Altar of the Brood / Disciple of the Vault) to mill or drain the table
  • ▸Saheeli Rai or Felidar Guardian token armies swinging for lethal
  • ▸Grinding incremental value into an overwhelming board, then closing with finishers like Approach of the Second Sun
  • ▸Aminatou's ultimate to steal a key player's board and tip a long game

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — Her -1 reuses ETB creatures every turn, the deck's core engine.
  • Combo — Felidar Guardian, Saheeli, or Cloudstone loops produce deterministic infinite ETB or token wins.
  • Control — Esper removal, counters, and card advantage let her grind while assembling the combo.
  • Superfriends — As a low-cost planeswalker she slots into a Doubling Season/proliferate walker shell.
