BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of your upkeep, each player sacrifices a non-Vampire creature of their choice.

Guide

Gameplan

Anowon turns every upkeep into a one-sided Edict that wrecks creature-based decks while your Vampire tribe stays exempt. Flood the board with Vampires, protect your commander, and grind opponents out of creatures before closing with tribal aggro or drain effects.

Strengths

  • Repeatable forced sacrifice strips opponents of blockers and key creatures every turn
  • Exempts your own Vampires, giving the tribe a built-in asymmetric advantage
  • Mono-black access to powerful tutors, removal, and recursion
  • Punishes go-wide token and creature-heavy decks hard

Weaknesses

  • Symmetrical wording still forces YOU to sacrifice if you lack non-Vampire creatures
  • Anowon is a removal magnet and the deck loses tempo when he dies repeatedly
  • Does little against artifact, enchantment, planeswalker, or combo strategies
  • Single-color means no access to counterspells or flexible interaction

Key Cards

  • Captivating Vampire — Anthem plus the ability to steal creatures opponents are forced to keep, and taps to control them.
  • Bloodline Keeper — Generates a steady stream of Vampire tokens to fuel the tribe and feed Anowon's exemption.
  • Patriarch's Bidding — Mass-reanimates your Vampires while opponents struggle to rebuild from the edict grind.
  • Whip of Erebos — Lifelink and recursion keep your aggressive Vampires relevant through removal-heavy boards.
  • Vampire Nocturnus — Massive tribal pump and evasion that can end games out of nowhere.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the Vampire count so you're never the one losing a creature to the upkeep, and add fast mana like Sol Ring and a Crypt to deploy threats ahead of curve. Bring in efficient protection (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find anthems, and stack reanimation like Reanimate and Animate Dead to recur key Vampires through the grind.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Tribal Vampire beatdown buffed by anthems and evasion
  • ▸Edict-grinding opponents creatureless then attacking unopposed
  • ▸Aristocrat drain with payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat

Archetypes

  • Vampire Tribal — Anowon's exemption rewards filling the board exclusively with Vampires for an asymmetric edict.
  • Stax/Attrition — The forced upkeep sacrifice acts as a slow-burn stax piece grinding opponents out of creatures.
  • Aristocrats — Mono-black sac payoffs turn the constant sacrifices into drain and value engines.
