BuildCard details

The Commander

Other Rogues you control get +1/+1.

Whenever one or more Rogues you control deal combat damage to a player, that player mills a card for each 1 damage dealt to them. If the player mills at least one creature card this way, you draw a card. (To mill a card, a player puts the top card of their library into their graveyard.)

Guide

Gameplan

Anowon turns a wide board of Rogues into a self-mill/card-advantage engine: connect with Rogues, mill opponents proportional to combat damage, and draw cards every time a creature is milled. You curve out cheap evasive Rogues, buff them with the static +1/+1, and grind opponents' libraries down while refilling your own hand, eventually decking the table or winning through unblockable beats.

Strengths

  • Massive built-in card advantage—every connecting Rogue can refill your hand each turn
  • Anthem effect makes your whole tribe bigger, closing games faster
  • Self-sustaining mill that doubles as a real wincon (decking opponents)
  • Excellent synergy with the deep Dimir Rogue package and unblockable/menace enablers
  • Blue gives counterspells and protection while black supplies removal and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; without Anowon the draw and anthem evaporate
  • Mill can backfire by filling opponents' graveyards (reanimator/delve/threshold)
  • Needs evasion to reliably connect—gets stonewalled by ground blockers and fog
  • Board wipes are devastating to a go-wide creature deck
  • Slow against fast combo if you can't apply early pressure or interaction

Key Cards

  • Coastal Piracy — Stacks with Anowon so each Rogue hit draws extra cards, supercharging the engine.
  • Notorious Throng — Token-doubling and extra turns synergize perfectly with milling opponents via Rogue combat damage.
  • Thada Adel, Acquisitor — Islandwalk evasion plus a Rogue that steals artifacts while triggering Anowon's mill/draw.
  • Soaring Seacliff — Cheap evasion enabler turning a key Rogue unblockable to guarantee the draw trigger.
  • Didn't Say Please — Counterspell that mills, fitting the strategy while protecting your engine.

Upgrade Path

Add more evasion enablers (Whispersilk Cloak, Rogue's Passage, Aqueous Form) and Rogue payoffs to make every attack count, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to keep Anowon alive. Tighten the curve with cheap, hard-to-block Rogues and include fast mana (Sol Ring, signets) to deploy the board early. To lean harder into mill, run Bruvac the Grandiloquent as a doubler and Maddening Cacophony/Fleet Swallower for explosive turns.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Mill opponents out of cards with repeated wide Rogue connections
  • ▸Beat down with buffed evasive Rogues for lethal combat damage
  • ▸Leverage overwhelming card advantage into a finisher like Notorious Throng extra turns or a big alpha strike

Archetypes

  • Rogue Tribal — Anowon's anthem and damage trigger reward flooding the board with cheap evasive Rogues.
  • Mill — Combat-damage milling scaled by creature count makes decking out the table a real plan.
  • Aggro-Tempo — Cheap evasive bodies plus card advantage let you pressure life totals while staying ahead.
