BuildCard details

The Commander

Deathtouch

Whenever Aphelia attacks, you may pay {1}{B/G}. If you do, create a 1/1 black Snake creature token with deathtouch.

{4}{B}: Until end of turn, whenever one or more Gorgons and/or Snakes you control deal combat damage to a player, that player loses half their life, rounded up.

Guide

Gameplan

Aphelia is a 2-mana BG aggro/midrange commander who pumps out deathtouch Snake tokens every combat, then converts even a single point of connecting damage into half-life loss via her activated ability. You flood the board with deathtouch bodies (great blockers and attackers), then close games by activating her ability and getting Snakes/Gorgons through. She wants to attack early and often, snowballing tokens into a lethal swing.

Strengths

  • Deathtouch Snake tokens make attacking and blocking miserable for opponents, controlling the board cheaply.
  • Her half-life ability turns chip damage into explosive, multi-turn lethal clocks across the table.
  • Only 2 mana to cast, so she's resilient to removal and quick to redeploy.
  • Token generation synergizes with go-wide payoffs, sacrifice value, and anthem effects.

Weaknesses

  • She must attack to generate value, exposing her to combat tricks and forcing risky commitments.
  • The half-life ability is mana-hungry at 5 mana and only lasts one turn.
  • Snake tribal support is shallow compared to other token themes, leaning on generic go-wide cards.
  • Board wipes hit her token strategy hard and can reset your snowball.
  • Lacks card advantage in the command zone, so the deck can run out of gas.

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns your endless stream of 1/1 deathtouch Snakes into a card-draw engine.
  • Coat of Arms — Massively pumps a wide board of Snakes to enable lethal Aphelia ability swings.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every Snake token Aphelia creates on attack, snowballing your board.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts a wide deathtouch token army into a one-shot kill alongside her ability.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure off dying tokens to fuel her expensive activated ability.

Upgrade Path

Add mana acceleration and token doublers (Parallel Lives, Mondrak) so you can both swarm and afford her costly ability in the same turn. Tighten the win with overrun effects and an aristocrat package (Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) for resilient damage that doesn't rely on combat math. Fast mana like Sol Ring, Fellwar Stone, and efficient ramp plus a few targeted board-wipe insurance cards (Heroic Intervention) will push it toward high power.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Activating Aphelia's ability and connecting with multiple Snakes/Gorgons to halve and then eliminate opponents' life.
  • ▸Going wide with token doublers and overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth for one-shot combat kills.
  • ▸Grinding incremental life loss via aristocrat drains like Blood Artist off dying tokens.
  • ▸Deathtouch deterrence stalling the board while you assemble a lethal alpha strike.

Archetypes

  • Tokens — She makes a Snake every attack and rewards going wide with anthems and doublers.
  • Aristocrats — Deathtouch tokens are perfect sacrifice fodder for drain and value engines.
  • Aggro/Midrange — Cheap commander plus deathtouch beaters apply early pressure and snowball into lethal.
  • +1/+1 Counters — BG offers counter support to buff Snakes into a threatening, ability-fueled army.
