The Commander

Whenever a player casts an artifact, instant, or sorcery spell, you create a Mutagen token. (It's an artifact with "{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. Activate only as a sorcery.")

Guide

Gameplan

April turns every artifact, instant, and sorcery cast at the table—yours and your opponents'—into a stream of Mutagen artifact tokens, which you convert into raw counter power or feed into artifact payoffs. You build a spell-and-artifact-heavy mono-blue shell, draw cards, and snowball a wide board of tokens and counter-pumped threats before closing with an overrun or a big artifact engine.

Strengths

  • Generates value off ALL players' spells, so the engine never stops in multiplayer
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best card draw, counterspells, and tutors
  • Mutagens fuel three axes at once: +1/+1 counters, artifact-matters, and sacrifice payoffs
  • Cheap 4-mana commander that immediately produces tokens with minimal setup

Weaknesses

  • Mutagens are slow individually—1 mana, sorcery-speed, one counter each
  • Mono-blue struggles to interact with established permanents and lacks board wipes
  • Relies heavily on the commander being on the battlefield; vulnerable to removal
  • Can fizzle against decks that don't cast many spells or stall on closing out

Key Cards

  • The Reality Chip — Card advantage that snowballs with all the artifact tokens you're flooding the board with.
  • Marionette Master — Turns your pile of sacrificed Mutagens into a lethal aristocrats-style drain.
  • Sai, Master Thopterist — Loves the constant artifact creation, drawing cards and making blockers off the same triggers.
  • Hardened Scales — Doubles the value of every Mutagen counter, accelerating your counter-based threats.
  • Cyberdrive Awakener — Animates your hoard of Mutagen tokens into a swarm of flying attackers for a quick kill.
  • Mystic Forge — Lets you chain artifacts off the top to keep the spell triggers and Mutagens flowing.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt) and cheap cantrips to crank up spell volume and Mutagen output early. Lean into a focused payoff—either an aristocrats finisher like Marionette Master plus sac outlets, or a counter-doubler package (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution)—rather than spreading thin. Tighten the manabase with fetch/dual options and protect April with counterspells and recursion like Heroic Intervention-equivalent blue protection (Tale's End, Veil of Summer is off-color, so use Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves).

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Animate your Mutagen tokens (Cyberdrive Awakener, March of the Machines) and swing wide
  • ▸Sacrifice Mutagens with Marionette Master or similar to drain the table
  • ▸Pump a single threat huge with stacked counters and connect for commander damage or lethal
  • ▸Grind out a dominant board and overwhelm with raw artifact value advantage

Archetypes

  • Artifacts — Mutagens are artifacts, so every artifact-matters payoff scales with April's nonstop token production.
  • Spellslinger — Each instant and sorcery you cast nets a Mutagen, rewarding a dense package of cantrips and spells.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Mutagens convert directly into counters, supporting counter-doublers and counter synergy creatures.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing Mutagens triggers death/sac payoffs for incremental drain and value.
