BuildCard details

The Commander

When April O'Neil enters, scry 2. (Look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them on the bottom and the rest on top in any order.)

April O'Neil can't be blocked by creatures with power 3 or greater.

Guide

Gameplan

April is a cheap mono-white evasive threat that slips past big blockers, making her an ideal commander damage carrier and a reliable trigger for combat-damage payoffs. Drop her early, suit her up with equipment and protective auras, and chip in repeatedly while leaning on white's recursion and stax pieces to grind opponents out. Alternatively, treat her as an unblockable shell for ninjutsu and 'whenever a creature deals combat damage' effects.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander that's easy to recast after removal
  • Built-in evasion against the format's many large blockers makes Voltron consistent
  • Scry 2 on every cast smooths draws and digs toward equipment or answers
  • Mono-white gives access to the best protection, recursion, and taxing pieces
  • Low curve frees mana for equipment, anthems, and protection

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white has the format's weakest card draw and ramp
  • Easily chump-blocked by small (power 0-2) tokens, blunting Voltron damage
  • No evasion against fliers, deathtouch pingers, or sacrifice/edict effects
  • Relies heavily on attaching cards to one creature, vulnerable to 2-for-1 removal
  • Limited Ninja tribal support in a single color

Key Cards

  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof plus haste protects April from targeted removal and lets her attack immediately after recasting.
  • Shadowspear — Trample pushes commander damage through chump blockers and grants lifelink for stabilization.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Flash equipment in at instant speed for surprise blocks-or-damage and frees up combat math.
  • Loran's Escape — Cheap protection that saves April from removal while leaving an attacker on board.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-white's premier card-draw engine, crucial for refilling a color starved for cards.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equip costs and card draw turn April into a snowballing Voltron threat.

Upgrade Path

Add stronger white card advantage and ramp like Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, and Land Tax to fight the color's weaknesses. Tighten the equipment suite with efficient, evasion-amplifying gear (Shadowspear, Embercleave-style trample, Sword of X and Y for protection) and add Sigarda's Aid plus Puresteel Paladin for free attaches. Finally, slot mono-white wraths you can survive (Cataclysmic Gideon, Tragic Arrogance) and protection like Teferi's Protection so a single board wipe doesn't reset your Voltron plan.

Win Conditions

  • ▸21 commander damage via equipment and trample
  • ▸Wide creature swarm backed by anthems and overrun-style effects
  • ▸Repeated combat-damage triggers from ninjutsu payoffs
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with stax and recursion until they can't answer her

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Her evasion against power-3+ creatures makes equipment and aura beats reliably connect for commander damage.
  • Ninjas/Combat damage — As a cheap unblockable body she enables ninjutsu and 'when this deals combat damage' triggers.
  • Mono-White Aggro — Her low cost and evasion anchor a go-wide, anthem-supported beatdown plan.
  • Hatebears/Stax — White's taxing creatures slow the table while April grinds in evasive damage.
