The Commander

Whenever a Mutant, Ninja, or Turtle you control enters, investigate. (Create a Clue token. It's an artifact with "{2}, Sacrifice this token: Draw a card.")

Partner—Character select

Guide

Gameplan

April O'Neil turns your Mutant/Ninja/Turtle creatures into a steady stream of Clue tokens, fueling a card-advantage engine that snowballs into a wide board or grindy control finish. You curve out cheap tribal bodies and changelings, crack Clues for gas, and leverage the artifact tokens for ramp, payoffs, and sacrifice value. With Partner—Character select you pair her with a second TMNT commander to deepen the tribe and add a clearer win angle.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage in mono-blue that doesn't cost a card—every relevant creature ETB makes a Clue
  • Cheap two-mana commander that comes online fast and recurs Clue engines if she returns to the battlefield
  • Synergy with artifact-matters and sacrifice payoffs since Clues are artifacts that fuel them
  • Partner—Character select lets you build a focused tribal core with a complementary second commander

Weaknesses

  • Mono-blue removal is weak; struggles to interact with resolved threats outside bounce and counters
  • Mutant/Ninja/Turtle is a shallow tribe outside changelings and the TMNT cards, forcing reliance on tokens
  • Clue value is slow—cracking them costs {2} each and can be mana-intensive without payoffs
  • No built-in win condition; the deck draws cards but needs dedicated finishers
  • Vulnerable to artifact wipes and graveyard/token hate that blow out your Clue economy

Key Cards

  • Academy Manufactor — Multiplies every investigate into Clues, Treasures, and Food, turbocharging both card draw and ramp.
  • Universal Automaton — A one-mana changeling that counts as Mutant, Ninja, and Turtle, triggering April reliably and enabling tribal payoffs.
  • Realmwalker — Names your creature type and lets you cast tribal bodies off the top, feeding April triggers turn after turn.
  • Reckoner Bankbuster — A self-replicating artifact engine that pairs with your Clue/artifact theme for extra card flow and a body.
  • Trail of Evidence — Adds even more Clues whenever you cast instants and sorceries, stacking on April's engine.
  • Maskwood Nexus — Makes every creature a changeling, so all your ETBs trigger April and turns the deck fully tribal.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into changelings (Mistform Ultimus, Chameleon Colossus-style bodies) and token doublers so every ETB triggers April, then add Academy Manufactor and Maskwood Nexus as engine multipliers. Choose a Partner—Character select co-commander that provides an actual win angle—an aggressive turtle or a sac/aristocrats engine—since April only draws cards. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, signets) and add efficient interaction (Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, Pongify) to survive long enough for the Clue economy to dominate.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with tribal/changeling tokens backed by an anthem or overrun-style finisher
  • ▸Out-drawing the table into a control win with counterspells and a single big threat
  • ▸Leveraging Academy Manufactor and artifact payoffs for explosive resource advantage and combo finishers
  • ▸Damage/value from a Partner—Character select co-commander that closes faster than April alone

Archetypes

  • Tribal Tokens — Mutant/Ninja/Turtle tokens and changelings go wide while each one investigates for inevitability.
  • Artifacts/Clues Value — Clue tokens feed artifact-matters payoffs, ramp, and sacrifice synergies in mono-blue.
  • Control/Card Advantage — A flood of Clues and counterspells lets you out-resource the table and grind to a finish.
  • Aristocrats-lite — Clues as sacrifice fodder enable artifact-sac engines and value loops with a partner.
