The Commander

Whenever April deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards, then discard a card.

Guide

Gameplan

April is a mono-blue card-advantage engine disguised as a Voltron threat: pump her up, make her unblockable, and connect to refill your hand every turn. Use the cards you draw to deploy counters, evasion, and protection, snowballing into a hand so deep you bury the table in interaction and finishers.

Strengths

  • Refuels your hand every combat, making mono-blue card disadvantage a non-issue
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that comes down early and starts working immediately
  • Loots away dead cards, smoothing draws and enabling graveyard synergies
  • Scales hard—the bigger she hits, the more cards you draw
  • Pairs naturally with blue's deep evasion and protection suite

Weaknesses

  • Reliant on combat damage, so chump blockers and removal shut off the engine
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and life gain
  • Vulnerable to being a glass cannon if you over-invest in equipment/auras
  • No innate evasion—she needs help to connect
  • Slow to actually close games without a dedicated win condition

Key Cards

  • Rogue's Passage — Reliably makes April unblockable so the draw trigger always fires.
  • Aqueous Form — Cheap permanent unblockable plus scry to guarantee connections every turn.
  • Curiosity — Doubles your card flow whenever April connects, an absurd engine piece.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants both unblockable and hexproof, protecting your key threat while enabling damage.
  • Thassa, God of the Sea — Indestructible blocker-mover that makes April unblockable each turn and scrys.
  • Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive — Makes April unblockable if you keep her power low, or supports a wider unblockable team.

Upgrade Path

Lean into cheap, repeatable unblockable enablers (Aqueous Form, Tetsuko, Rogue's Passage) and card-draw doublers (Curiosity, Snake Umbra) so April nets value the turn she connects. Add protection like Swiftfoot Boots and counterspell backup to keep her alive, then install a clean win condition—Thassa's Oracle plus a way to empty your library, or a hard-hitting Voltron package—so the cards you draw actually translate into a kill. Top-end ramp like fast mana and Sol Ring lets you deploy April plus an enabler on the same turn for an explosive start.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸21 commander damage with a buffed, unblockable April
  • ▸Drawing your whole deck into a finisher like Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac
  • ▸Casting a large X-spell or Blue Sun's Zenith finisher off accumulated mana and cards
  • ▸Overwhelming the table with countermagic and card advantage until they run out of resources

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Suiting up April for big unblockable hits maximizes both card draw and commander damage.
  • Spellslinger/Control — The constant card refill fuels counterspells, bounce, and instant-speed interaction.
  • Tempo/Tinker — Cheap evasion and pump pieces let April reliably connect while you grind value.
