The Commander

As long as Archelos is tapped, other permanents enter tapped.

As long as Archelos is untapped, other permanents enter untapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Archelos is a flexible toggle: keep it untapped so your own lands and permanents enter untapped (turbo ramp and free mana), then tap it to lock opponents into entering everything tapped (soft Stax that slows the whole table). You leverage Sultai ramp and value to snowball into either a big mana payoff or an asymmetric stax lock, winning through card advantage, big creatures, or a combo finish.

Strengths

  • Symmetric ETB-tapped effect becomes asymmetric in your favor with ways to tap Archelos at will
  • Untapped Archelos turns every land and ramp piece into a free, full-speed mana source for explosive starts
  • Sultai colors give the best ramp, card draw, removal, and recursion in the format
  • Deck can pivot between aggressive ramp/value and a hard stax-style slowdown depending on board state
  • Punishes flash decks, blink decks, and anyone relying on lands and mana rocks entering untapped

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; the lock collapses the moment Archelos dies, and it's a fragile 4-mana creature
  • Needs reliable repeatable ways to tap/untap Archelos to control which mode you're in each turn
  • The tapped effect also hits your own permanents if you can't toggle it precisely
  • Lacks an inherent win condition—must build toward one outside the commander
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and targeted removal that reset your engine

Key Cards

  • Seedborn Muse — Untaps Archelos and your lands every turn, letting you hold up the untapped mode while still acting on opponents' turns.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets you tap Archelos for mana on demand to flip into the stax mode whenever you want.
  • Winter Orb — Pairs brutally with Archelos—opponents' lands enter tapped and the Orb keeps them tapped while your untap effects ignore it.
  • Static Orb — Same asymmetric stax synergy: lock the table while you keep mana flowing through untap engines.
  • Kiora's Follower — Untaps Archelos (and a land) every turn for a cheap, repeatable toggle and ramp.
  • Amulet of Vigor — Mitigates the downside on your own permanents when Archelos is tapped by untapping everything that enters.
  • Cryptolith Rite — Turns creatures into mana, making it easy to keep generating mana even while permanents enter tapped.

Upgrade Path

Add more on-demand untappers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Kiora's Follower, Pemmin's Aura) so you can choose Archelos's mode every turn, and lean into asymmetric stax with Winter Orb, Static Orb, and Tangle Wire backed by Amulet of Vigor to ignore the downside. Tighten the mana base and tutors (Demonic/Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor) to reliably find a payoff, and include protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to keep the commander online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Resolve a big-mana finisher like a hydra, X-spell, or Craterhoof-style alpha strike off explosive ramp
  • ▸Lock the table under Winter/Static Orb-style stax and grind out value until you win uncontested
  • ▸Assemble an untap-based combo (Seedborn Muse + mana doublers) to generate game-winning resources
  • ▸Ride incremental card advantage and removal into a slow control kill with evasive threats

Archetypes

  • Stax — Tapping Archelos forces every opponent's permanent to enter tapped, taxing lands, rocks, and creatures across the table.
  • Ramp/Big Mana — Keeping Archelos untapped means lands and mana rocks enter untapped, fueling explosive turns into huge payoffs.
  • Control — Sultai removal, counters, and the soft tap-lock let you grind opponents out while protecting your engine.
  • Combo — Untap effects plus mana doublers and Archelos's free-mana ramp can power out infinite or game-ending combos.
