BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace, lifelink

Whenever a historic creature you control deals combat damage to a player, create a 1/1 black Assassin creature token with menace. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

Guide

Gameplan

Aya turns a board of historic creatures—legends, artifact creatures, and the like—into an ever-growing army of menacing Assassin tokens. You curve out aggressive legendary and artifact creatures, swing with menace and lifelink to stay healthy, and snowball each connection into more attackers until the table is buried under bodies.

Strengths

  • Each unblocked historic creature generates a token, so a wide board compounds fast
  • Lifelink on the commander keeps you out of burn/aggro range while pressing the offensive
  • Menace on Aya and her tokens makes blocking math miserable for opponents
  • Legendary and artifact creatures are abundant in RW, so 'historic' is easy to hit

Weaknesses

  • Token generation only triggers on combat damage to players, so good blockers or fog effects shut it off
  • Heavy reliance on the commander; repeated removal or sweepers stall the engine
  • No built-in card advantage—can run out of gas after a board wipe
  • Lacks evasion beyond menace, so flyers and ground gummed up by tokens can race you

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns your endless 1/1 Assassin tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every Assassin token Aya creates, exploding your board presence.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering pumps your whole team, quickly making attacks lethal.
  • Mardu Ascendancy — Makes extra tokens whenever your historic creatures attack, stacking with Aya's combat trigger.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Flash in equipment to give attackers evasion and trample, ensuring damage connects to trigger Aya.
  • Dolmen Gate — Lets your historic attackers swing in freely without dying, maximizing combat-damage triggers.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak, Glory Dominus) and payoffs like Cathars' Crusade and Impact Tremors to convert quantity into reach. Prioritize evasion enablers (Sigarda's Aid, equipment, Dolmen Gate) so your historic creatures reliably connect, and run robust card advantage (Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire) plus protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) to survive wraths. For higher power, lean into a sacrifice subtheme so even chump-blocked tokens convert into damage or value.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelm the table with a swarm of menacing Assassin tokens and anthem effects
  • ▸Sacrifice the army to a Goblin Bombardment / Impact Tremors-style damage engine
  • ▸Voltron-style alpha strike with Aya carrying equipment and trample
  • ▸Token-fueled combos like Skullclamp value into an unstoppable board

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Aya manufactures a steady stream of Assassin tokens that anthems and doublers turn into a flood.
  • Aggro — Menace plus lifelink lets you attack early and often while staying healthy.
  • Legendary Tribal — Every legendary creature counts as historic, so a deck of legends maximizes token output.
  • Artifact Creatures — Artifact creatures are historic, enabling an aggressive RW artifact-beatdown build.
