The Commander

Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

{T}: Counter target activated ability from an artifact source unless that ability's controller pays {W}. (Mana abilities can't be targeted.)

Guide

Gameplan

Ayesha Tanaka is a low-power UW commander best built as an artifact-flavored control/midrange deck that taxes opponents' artifact activated abilities while you assemble a stable board. You durdle in the early game with ramp and removal, use her tap ability situationally as a soft-tax against equipment, mana rocks (non-mana abilities), and artifact engines, and grind toward an artifact-or-banding-themed finish. Realistically she's a casual, theme-driven build rather than a tuned threat.

Strengths

  • Color access to the best removal, board wipes, and counterspells in UW
  • Built-in soft hatebear effect against artifact-heavy decks and equipment voltron
  • Banding can blow out combat math and protect your creatures in a defensive control shell
  • Cheap commander at 4 mana that doesn't need to be cast repeatedly to function

Weaknesses

  • Her ability only hits artifact activated abilities, so it's narrow and dead against many tables
  • No card advantage or ramp stapled to the commander
  • Banding is poorly understood and rarely game-warping outside niche combat lines
  • UW lacks reliable, color-pie-friendly fast wincons without dedicated infinite combos
  • Telegraphs nothing threatening, so the deck must win on its own merits

Key Cards

  • Smothering Tithe — Premier white ramp that fuels her tap-tax mana demands and your control spells.
  • Swords to Plowshares — Best-in-class cheap removal to keep you alive while the deck grinds.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The format's defining UW reset that lets a slow control deck pull ahead and close.
  • Mishra's Factory — A banding-relevant artifact creature land that pairs combat tricks with your tax theme.
  • Urza, Lord High Artificer — Turns an artifact subtheme into mana, card advantage, and a real win engine.
  • Teferi's Protection — Premium protection for a fragile control deck that wants to survive to the late game.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the artifact subtheme with Urza, cost reducers, and mana rocks so her ability is more relevant while building toward a compact combo finish. Add more interaction (Counterspell, Mana Drain, Cyclonic Rift) and ramp (Smothering Tithe, signets) to support a true control plan, since the commander provides little on her own. If you want consistency, pick one dedicated wincon package rather than relying on banding combat to close games.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Resolve a UW infinite or near-infinite combo (e.g., Urza-driven engines) for the kill
  • ▸Grind to inevitability with Cyclonic Rift plus a few evasive or banding attackers
  • ▸Assemble an artifact-powered token or beatdown swarm protected by banding
  • ▸Lock the table with control elements and win with a single resilient finisher

Archetypes

  • Artifact Control/Stax — Her tap ability taxes opposing artifact abilities, supporting a tax-and-control plan.
  • UW Control — Color identity gives counters, wraths, and removal to grind out the table.
  • Banding Combat/Tribal — She's a banding payoff for a janky combat-math deck built around old banding creatures.
  • Artifacts Matter — A natural home for artifact synergies, cost reducers, and Urza-style value.
