Mana value5Rank#7,783
BuildCard details

The Commander

Firebending 2 (Whenever this creature attacks, add {R}{R}. This mana lasts until end of combat.)

When Azula enters, target opponent exiles a nontoken creature they control, then they exile a nonland card from their graveyard.

During your turn, you may cast cards exiled with Azula and you may cast them as though they had flash. Mana of any type can be spent to cast those spells.

Guide

Gameplan

Azula is a theft commander: each time she enters she steals a creature in play and a card from a graveyard, then lets you cast those exiled cards on your turn with flash and any color of mana. Recast and blink her repeatedly to strip opponents of their best threats and turn them against the table, while Firebending 2 fuels off-color stolen spells and aggressive attacks. You grind incremental advantage until your borrowed army plus your own threats close the game.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, color-agnostic theft that ignores color identity restrictions on cast spells
  • ETB value that punishes graveyard-reliant and creature-heavy opponents simultaneously
  • Firebending and 'any type of mana' fix casting stolen off-color cards
  • Strong in blink/recursion shells that re-trigger her ETB

Weaknesses

  • Theft is single-target, so swarmy go-wide decks blunt her impact
  • Relies on opponents having good targets — falls flat against token or low-creature builds
  • Built-in card advantage stops if Azula is removed or repeatedly answered
  • Five mana and combat-dependent for Firebending makes her slow to a fast start
  • No evasion or protection by herself; easily chump-blocked or killed

Key Cards

  • Ghostly Flicker — Reblinks Azula to repeat her exile-and-cast ETB for ongoing theft.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Free end-of-turn flicker that steals another creature each turn.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbond gives repeatable blink to chain Azula's ETB at instant speed.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices stolen creatures for mana and combo fuel before they're returned.
  • Bident of Thassa — Forces attacks and draws, leaning into Azula's firebending aggression and card flow.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Off-color castability is irrelevant here, but a premium reset to protect your stolen board.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize cheap, repeatable blink effects (Ghostly Flicker, Felidar Guardian, Restoration Angel) and sacrifice outlets so stolen creatures generate value before owners reclaim them. Add fast mana and protection like Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship, and Swan Song to defend Azula and ramp into early ETBs, plus tutors such as Vampiric Tutor to assemble blink loops. Lean into an aristocrats payoff package so each theft converts into guaranteed life loss even when stolen creatures don't stick.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with stolen threats backed by your own evasive creatures
  • ▸Sacrifice borrowed creatures to aristocrats drains like Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Combo finish using mana from Ashnod's Altar and recurring blink loops
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources until they have no answers and you out-value the table

Archetypes

  • Theft/Control — Azula directly steals opponents' creatures and graveyard cards and lets you cast them yourself.
  • Blink — Flickering Azula re-triggers her exile ability to repeatedly plunder opponents.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice stolen creatures for value before owners can reclaim them.
  • Spellslinger/Reanimator-hate — Exiling graveyard cards and casting them suppresses graveyard strategies while fueling your own.
