Mana value3Rank#13,851
BuildCard details

The Commander

Firebending 1 (Whenever this creature attacks, add {R}. This mana lasts until end of combat.)

Whenever Azula attacks, you may discard a card. Then you get an experience counter for each player who discarded a card this turn.

{2}{B}: Until end of turn, Azula gets +1/+1 for each experience counter you have and gains menace.

Guide

Gameplan

Azula is a mono-black voltron commander that snowballs experience counters by attacking and discarding cards, then converts that pile into a lethal, menacing threat with her {2}{B} pump. You curve her out turn 3, start swinging and discarding immediately, and lean on group-discard effects (wheels and symmetric discard) so every opponent contributes counters each turn. By midgame a single activation makes her a huge evasive attacker who closes games via commander damage.

Strengths

  • Builds a permanent, exponential threat through experience counters that survive board wipes and removal
  • Discard-as-cost turns on madness, reanimation, and graveyard payoffs as free value
  • Menace plus a large pump makes her hard to block and a fast commander-damage clock
  • Cheap 3-mana body that comes down early and can rebuild quickly after being killed
  • Firebending mana helps power out activations and other costs the turn she attacks

Weaknesses

  • Mono-black has weak access to ramp and no real way to protect a creature from removal beyond regeneration/protection
  • Heavily commander-dependent—if Azula is answered repeatedly, the deck stalls
  • Counters grow slowly unless you force opponents to discard, requiring extra deck support
  • No built-in evasion until you spend {2}{B}, leaving her chump-blockable in the early game
  • Vulnerable to fog, damage prevention, and go-wide blockers despite menace

Key Cards

  • Megrim — Punishes every discard—including the symmetric ones that grow Azula—turning your wheels into direct damage.
  • Liliana of the Dark Realms — Provides ramp and a mana sink in a color starved for acceleration to fund repeated pump activations.
  • Whispering Madness — Forces all players to discard their hands, banking a counter from each opponent in a single attack trigger turn.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud let Azula attack the turn she lands and dodge the targeted removal that otherwise stops her cold.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Lets you spend life as a resource to refill and keep discarding while pressing the offensive.
  • Archfiend of Ifnir — Converts your own discards into a one-sided board wipe that clears blockers for an evasive Azula.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Bubbling Muck) plus stronger ramp like Cabal Coffers and Nykthos to outpace mono-black's slow start and double-spell. Improve protection and recursion with Swiftfoot Boots, Imp's Mischief, and reanimation targets such as Massacre Wurm; tutors like Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor consistently find your wheels and discard payoffs. Finally, lean into forced group-discard (Bottomless Pit, Liliana's Caress, Waste Not) so every attack reliably nets multiple experience counters.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a pumped, menacing Azula carrying counters
  • ▸Group-discard plus Megrim/Liliana's Caress style payoffs draining the table
  • ▸Reanimated bombs and evasive beats closing out a grindy game
  • ▸Edicts and sacrifice strip blockers while Azula connects for lethal

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Experience counters make Azula an ever-growing, menacing threat that wins through commander damage.
  • Discard / Hellbent — Her attack trigger and the wheels you run weaponize discarding for both counters and payoffs.
  • Reanimator — Discarding fat creatures and recurring them with black reanimation spells turns the cost into card advantage.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice and graveyard value pair well with the discard outlets and recursion the deck wants to run.
