The Commander

Reach

Vehicles you control get +1/+1 and have vigilance and reach.

Whenever a Vehicle crewed by Balthier and Fran this turn attacks, if it's the first combat phase of the turn, you may pay {1}{R}{G}. If you do, after this phase, there is an additional combat phase.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a Vehicles-matters deck that crews wide and attacks fast, using Balthier and Fran to buff every Vehicle and grant evasive extra combats. Deploy cheap creatures and crew members early, stick big Vehicles, then crew them with the commander to trigger extra combat phases for double (or triple) damage.

Strengths

  • Anthem effect (+1/+1, vigilance, reach) makes your whole Vehicle board sturdier and able to block while attacking
  • Repeatable extra combat phases for only {1}{R}{G} create explosive burst damage and combat triggers
  • Vehicles dodge most sorcery-speed removal and board wipes since they're often non-creatures outside combat
  • Vigilance lets you attack every combat and still hold the fort, enabling aggressive racing

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the commander to enable extra combats; she's a removal magnet at 3 MV
  • Needs creatures to crew, so creature wipes can shut down your offense even if Vehicles survive
  • Extra combat triggers only work the first combat phase, so you must crew before declaring attacks
  • GR lacks strong card advantage and interaction, so it can run out of gas or get out-stabilized by control

Key Cards

  • Smuggler's Copter — Cheap evasive Vehicle that loots for card advantage and only needs one creature to crew.
  • Skysovereign, Consul Flagship — Flying Vehicle that pings creatures/planeswalkers each combat, doubling its removal with extra phases.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns your Vehicle and token deployment into incremental burn that scales with extra combats.
  • Cavalier of Thorns — Big crew body that ramps and provides reach/defense while waiting to attack.
  • Aggravated Assault — Backup extra-combat engine that combos toward near-infinite combats with ramp like Sword of Feast and Famine.
  • Reconfigured Pinwheel — Generic strong artifact placeholder—replace with token makers like Hangarback Walker for cheap crew.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient mana ramp (Sword of Feast and Famine, Bloom Tender, Birgi) so you can pay the extra-combat tax repeatedly and combo with Aggravated Assault. Tighten the curve with low-cost, high-impact Vehicles (Smuggler's Copter, Reckless Fireweaver synergies) and protect the commander with Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves. Trim filler artifacts for card advantage (Esika's Chariot, Beast Whisperer) and targeted removal to keep the aggression flowing.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated extra combat phases dealing lethal commander damage or trample/flying damage
  • ▸Burst from a buffed Vehicle like Skysovereign or Parhelion II attacking multiple times
  • ▸Aggravated Assault loops with ramp for infinite combats
  • ▸Incremental burn via Reckless Fireweaver/Disciple of the Vault-style triggers

Archetypes

  • Vehicles Aggro — The anthem and extra combats turn a board of Vehicles into a fast, evasive damage engine.
  • Extra Combats / Voltron — Stacking additional combat phases lets a single big Vehicle close games quickly.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Token producers supply cheap crew bodies and fodder to keep multiple Vehicles attacking.
