Bartz and Boko
GGreenLegendary Creature — Human Bird

Bartz and Boko

Mana value5Rank#7,445
BuildCard details

The Commander

Affinity for Birds (This spell costs {1} less to cast for each Bird you control.)

When Bartz and Boko enters, each other Bird you control deals damage equal to its power to target creature an opponent controls.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with Birds to cast Bartz and Boko cheaply, then leverage your wide flying army for combat damage while the ETB acts as repeatable removal. You ramp into a critical mass of Bird tokens and lords, blink or recast the commander to snipe blockers and threats, then swing for the win through the air.

Strengths

  • Affinity for Birds makes the commander dirt cheap once your board develops
  • ETB doubles as flexible, scalable removal that can pick off multiple creatures with blink effects
  • Mono-green offers the best ramp in the format to outpace opponents
  • Flying tribal evades most ground-based blockers for fast clocks

Weaknesses

  • Heavily board-dependent — a wrath sets you back to square one and makes the commander expensive again
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, lacking counterspells and efficient spot removal outside combat
  • Niche Bird tribal pool means weaker synergy density than established green typals like Elves
  • No built-in card advantage engine without supporting pieces

Key Cards

  • Soul of the Harvest — Turns every Bird and creature you cast into a card, refueling after board wipes.
  • Conclave Mentor — Boosts your token generators and incidentally pumps Bird power for a deadlier ETB.
  • Cackling Counterpart — Copies Bartz and Boko to retrigger the damage ETB and add another body.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your fragile, board-reliant Bird army from wraths and targeted removal.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts your wide flying board into a lethal alpha strike in one swing.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounces and recasts Birds to abuse the removal ETB repeatedly.

Upgrade Path

Lean into token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives) and Bird payoffs while adding green's best ramp (Cultivate, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) to deploy the commander turn after turn. Add recursion and blink (Roaming Throne, Conjurer's Closet, Cackling Counterpart) to abuse the removal ETB, and round out with protection (Heroic Intervention, Tamiyo's Safekeeping) so a single wrath doesn't end your game. Top it off with a reliable Craterhoof-style finisher to convert your board into immediate lethal.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide flying Bird army, often amplified by Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede
  • ▸Repeated ETB damage to clear blockers and grind out threats while chipping life away
  • ▸Anthem-pumped evasive beatdown through stacked Bird lords

Archetypes

  • Bird Tribal / Tokens — The commander rewards going wide with Birds, both to cheapen itself and to fuel the damage ETB.
  • Aggro / Go-Wide — A swarm of fliers backed by green anthems and overrun effects closes games fast.
  • Blink / Flicker — Flickering Bartz and Boko re-triggers its removal to repeatedly snipe opposing creatures.
  • Stompy Ramp — Green ramp accelerates into the commander and big finishers to overwhelm the table.
