BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever a Forest enters, green creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain trample until end of turn.

Grandeur — Discard another card named Baru, Fist of Krosa: Create an X/X green Wurm creature token, where X is the number of lands you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Baru is a mono-green landfall beatdown commander: ramp out forests, flood the board with green creatures, then trigger Baru by dropping (or blinking) Forests to pump your whole team with +1/+1 and trample for a giant alpha strike. Each Forest landfall is a combat-relevant anthem, so you want to play many lands per turn and swing wide with trample to push damage through chump blocks.

Strengths

  • Repeatable team-wide anthem plus trample makes every Forest a combat trick
  • Mono-green has the format's best ramp, enabling explosive multi-land turns
  • Trample turns wide token boards into reliable, unblockable damage
  • Cheap to recast and hard to permanently answer in a single-color deck

Weaknesses

  • Anthem only counts actual Forests, not nonbasic dual lands without the Forest type
  • Pump is temporary, so a board wipe at instant speed neutralizes your turn
  • Mono-green lacks interaction, card-draw smoothing, and removal flexibility
  • The Grandeur ability is nearly unusable since you rarely have two Barus
  • Relies on creatures sticking; sweepers and edicts hit you hard

Key Cards

  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays fetched or sacrificed lands to retrigger Baru's anthem every turn.
  • Ramunap Excavator — Creature-based land recursion that keeps Forests dropping for repeated pumps.
  • Scapeshift — Sacrifices lands to slam multiple Forests at once for a massive combat blowout.
  • Azusa, Lost but Seeking — Extra land drops mean multiple Baru triggers per turn for stacked anthems.
  • Cultivate — Fetches basic Forests to hand and battlefield, feeding both ramp and triggers.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts a wide, trampling green board into a one-shot kill.
  • Dryad of the Ilysian Grove — Adds an extra land drop and turns all your lands into Forests for consistent triggers.

Upgrade Path

Lean into extra land drops (Azusa, Oracle of Mul Daya, Exploration) plus land recursion (Crucible, Ramunap Excavator) so you can trigger Baru several times each turn. Add Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth so all your lands count as Forests, then cap with overrun finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth and Pathbreaker Ibex for guaranteed kills.
