The Commander

Double strike

During your turn, other historic creatures you control have double strike.

Disguise {1}{R}{W} (You may cast this card face down for {3} as a 2/2 creature with ward {2}. Turn it face up any time for its disguise cost.)

Guide

Gameplan

Bayek is an aggressive Boros midrange/Voltron-aggro commander that turns your board of historic creatures (legendaries, artifact creatures, and Sagas) into double-striking threats during your turn. You curve out efficient historic bodies, pump them with equipment or anthems, and swing for lethal commander/board damage in a couple of attacks. Bayek's own Disguise lets him sneak in cheaply and flip to dodge removal.

Strengths

  • Doubles combat damage across a whole subtype of creatures, enabling explosive turns
  • Synergizes naturally with equipment, big-power buffs, and trample for one-shot kills
  • Disguise gives flexibility and protection (ward 2) against targeted removal
  • Boros has excellent equipment, anthems, and extra-combat support

Weaknesses

  • Effect only works on your turn, so it does nothing defensively or on opponents' turns
  • Double strike is wasted without power boosts or evasion—needs build-around payoffs
  • RW lacks card draw and ramp, leading to mana/resource flood or screw
  • Board wipes hit your go-wide historic plan hard
  • Most synergy requires creatures to specifically be 'historic' (legendary/artifact/Saga)

Key Cards

  • Embercleave — Cheap to cast off a wide board and turns any double-striker into an instant kill with trample.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Adds protection, evasion, and damage that all double up under Bayek for huge swings.
  • Shadowspear — Cheap equipment granting trample so double strike actually connects for full damage.
  • Skullclamp — Boros's premier card-draw engine on cheap artifact creatures, fixing the deck's card disadvantage.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Indestructible plus a free attach engine makes a double-striking carrier nearly unkillable.
  • Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — A historic body that floods the board with tokens to grow her own attack into double-strike lethal.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rocks (Sol Ring, Boros Signet, Smothering Tithe) to outpace RW's slow ramp, and lean into evasion/trample enablers so double strike always connects. Include extra-combat effects like Aggravated Assault and Combat Celebration plus protection (Boots, Greaves, Heroic Intervention) to make alpha strikes lethal and resilient. Prioritize a high density of cheap, high-impact legendary and artifact creatures so Bayek's anthem is always live.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander or Voltron damage from an equipped double-striking attacker
  • ▸Wide alpha strike where multiple historic creatures all deal doubled damage
  • ▸Embercleave/Aggravated Assault-style extra combats for lethal in one turn
  • ▸Sword/anthem-buffed evasive creatures grinding opponents out

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Stack equipment on one historic creature and double strike turns it into a one-shot commander-damage threat.
  • Legendary/Historic Aggro — Bayek rewards a critical mass of legendary and artifact creatures all attacking with double strike.
  • Equipment Aggro — Boros equipment provides the power and evasion that double strike multiplies.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Artifact-token producers create many historic bodies that all gain double strike for a big alpha strike.
