The Commander

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell that targets only Bill Potts or activate an ability that targets only Bill Potts, copy that spell or ability. You may choose new targets for the copy. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Bill Potts is a Doctor's companion, so she's almost always paired with a Doctor to expand into a multicolor partner deck; the pairing wants to suit up one threat and crash in for big swings. Her own ability rewards casting buffs, protection, and targeted activated abilities on her (or your Doctor), copying the first such effect each turn and redirecting the copy elsewhere for extra value. Turn to turn you protect your beater, pump it, and double up on combat tricks or untap/value abilities to grind ahead.

Strengths

  • Effectively a free copy engine every turn for cheap pump and protection spells, generating two-for-one value
  • Doctor's companion lets you pick the partner that defines your colors and strategy, making her extremely flexible
  • Copy with new targets can split a buff between attackers or redirect a protective effect to dodge removal
  • Cheap to recast at four mana even after she dies

Weaknesses

  • Locked to red on her own; she contributes little without a good Doctor partner
  • Only triggers once per turn, so multi-target board states don't generate runaway value
  • Heavily reliant on having targeted spells/abilities in hand—dead in a vacuum
  • Single-target dependence makes her a magnet for removal, and losing the buffed creature is a big tempo hit
  • Mono-red's lack of card draw and recursion can leave you out of gas

Key Cards

  • Temur Battle Rage — Cheap double strike trick that copies onto a second attacker for a lethal alpha strike.
  • Brute Force — One-mana pump that doubles into a free +3/+3 redirected to another creature.
  • Apostle's Blessing — Protects Bill from removal and copies to shield a second key creature.
  • Berserk — A massive doubling and trample buff that copies for an explosive, often lethal, combat.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Equipment plus targeted activated synergies and protection make her a resilient voltron threat.
  • Reckless Charge — Cheap haste and pump with flashback, copyable for value across two creatures.

Upgrade Path

Pick a powerful Doctor partner (such as one giving evasion, card advantage, or extra colors) to fix mono-red's weaknesses and expand your toolbox. Prioritize cheap, efficient combat tricks and protection that target only Bill so the copy trigger always fires, and add evasion and double-strike enablers to convert pumps into damage. Round out with mana rocks, recursion, and a few tutors to find your key tricks consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting for lethal commander damage after stacking doubled pump spells
  • ▸Double strike plus trample combat tricks (Temur Battle Rage, Berserk) for an alpha-strike kill
  • ▸Grinding incremental value with redirected buffs and protection to outlast the table
  • ▸Closing with equipment-fueled voltron damage alongside the Doctor partner

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Her copy ability stacks buffs and protection onto one creature to push commander damage.
  • Spellslinger (combat tricks) — Loading up on cheap instants that target Bill turns each into a free two-for-one.
  • Partner value (Doctor pairing) — Choosing a Doctor partner shapes the whole deck and supplies extra colors and synergies.
  • Aggro — Mono-red's haste and pump suite lets her come down and attack quickly for fast clocks.
