The Commander

Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on each Pest, Bat, Insect, Snake, and Spider you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Blech turns lifegain into a board-wide pump engine, stacking +1/+1 counters on your Pests, Bats, Insects, Snakes, and Spiders every time you gain life. You flood the board with cheap creatures of those types, deploy repeatable lifegain (especially incidental triggers like food, lifelink, or per-turn gains), then crash in for huge swings or overwhelm with counter synergies. The deck plays like a typal go-wide aggro/midrange build that snowballs out of control once a lifegain engine is online.

Strengths

  • Each lifegain event pumps your entire qualifying board, so even small repeatable gains create massive cumulative growth
  • BG has deep access to cheap creatures across all five relevant types plus counter and graveyard support
  • Synergizes beautifully with food tokens, lifelink, and +1/+1 counter payoffs for layered value
  • Resilient go-wide plan that can rebuild after a single board wipe thanks to cheap recurring threats

Weaknesses

  • Relies on having both creatures and a lifegain source online—missing either half stalls the engine
  • Vulnerable to board wipes since the strategy is creature-density dependent
  • Triggers only help the listed creature types, so off-type good-stuff dilutes the payoff
  • No innate evasion or protection, so a clogged board can get stonewalled by bigger blockers

Key Cards

  • Cathars' Crusade — Independent counter engine that stacks alongside Blech for explosive board growth.
  • Trelasarra, Moon Dancer — Another lifegain-to-counters payoff that doubles up your engine's reach.
  • Felidar Sovereign — Frequent lifegain easily pushes you to 40 life for an alternate win.
  • Heartmender — Lifegain triggers protect your wide creature board from removal.
  • Soul Warden — Cheap repeatable lifegain that fires Blech every time any creature enters.
  • Trostani, Selesnya's Voice — Populate aside, its per-creature lifegain constantly triggers Blech (in BG splash builds, swap for Essence Warden).

Upgrade Path

Add more free, repeatable lifegain (Soul Warden effects, Wickerbough Elder/Soul's Attendant variants, lifelink anthems) so Blech fires multiple times per turn cycle, and prioritize on-type creatures over generic good-stuff. Layer in independent counter doublers like Doubling Season and Hardened Scales, plus protection (Heroic Intervention, Boros Charm-style effects in color) to insulate your board from wipes. For a higher-power finish, include payoffs that convert your wide board into immediate damage, such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede.
