The Commander

First strike

Whenever a Pirate you control attacks, choose one that hasn't been chosen this turn —

• Create a Treasure token.

• Target creature can't block this turn.

• Exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Breeches is a mono-red Pirate aggro/tribal commander that snowballs through combat. Each Pirate attack triggers a menu effect: ramp into Treasure, push damage by removing a blocker, or impulse-draw to keep the gas flowing. You flood the board with Pirates, swing wide every turn, and use Treasure plus impulsive card advantage to refuel and finish before opponents stabilize.

Strengths

  • Multiple Pirate attackers stack triggers, giving you ramp, evasion, and card advantage simultaneously every combat
  • Treasure generation fixes nothing (mono-red) but ramps hard and fuels artifact/sacrifice payoffs
  • First strike makes Breeches a respectable attacker and survivor in combat
  • Cheap three-mana commander that gets back into play quickly and snowballs fast

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red means weak interaction, no enchantment removal, and limited recovery from board wipes
  • Heavily creature-reliant; a single sweeper can devastate the Pirate board
  • Triggers only fire on attack, so it folds to Stax, fog effects, and strong blockers/deterrents
  • Impulsive card advantage is temporary and punishes a clogged hand or slow draws

Key Cards

  • Admiral Beckett Brass — A second Pirate lord that buffs your team and can steal opposing permanents when Pirates connect.
  • Hellkite Tyrant — Treasure synergy plus an alternate artifact-count win condition that mono-red rarely gets.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Doubles Treasure value and turns each token into two mana, accelerating explosive turns.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns every Treasure created by Breeches into direct, repeatable damage to all opponents.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Generates a pile of Treasure off opponents' nonland permanents to power huge swings.
  • Mardu Ascendancy — Creates a token whenever your creatures attack, widening the board and multiplying Breeches triggers.

Upgrade Path

Lean into payoffs that convert Treasure into damage or value (Reckless Fireweaver, Mahadi, Hellkite Tyrant) and add cheap evasive Pirates plus more lords like Admiral Beckett Brass. Improve interaction with efficient red removal (Chaos Warp, Abrade) and a couple of board-wipe insurances, then add fast mana (Ancient Tomb, Sol Ring, Jeska's Will) to start the engine a turn early. Tighten the curve so impulse draws stay castable and add a haste enabler or two to keep the aggro plan ahead.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide Pirate beatdown with evasion enabled by the can't-block mode
  • ▸Reckless Fireweaver / Marionette Master style Treasure-drain burn
  • ▸Hellkite Tyrant artifact-count win off massive Treasure piles
  • ▸Explosive impulse-fueled big-mana turns dumping threats and burn

Archetypes

  • Pirate Tribal Aggro — Breeches rewards going wide with Pirates by stacking a combat-trigger menu for each attacker.
  • Treasure/Artifacts — The Treasure mode ramps and feeds artifact payoffs, sacrifice outlets, and storm-like turns.
  • Spellslinger/Impulse — The exile-and-play mode generates card advantage that pairs with cost reducers and cast triggers.
  • Aristocrats — Treasures and Pirate tokens give fodder for sacrifice synergies and drain effects.
