BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Tunnel Snakes Rule! — Whenever Butch DeLoria attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each other Rogue and/or Snake you control.

{1}{B}: Put a menace counter on another target creature. It becomes a Rogue in addition to its other types.

Guide

Gameplan

Butch is a cheap, evasive mono-black tribal aggro commander that wants a board of Rogues and Snakes. Deploy small evasive threats early, then swing with Butch—who balloons in size for each other Rogue/Snake—while his activated ability spreads menace and Rogue typing across your team to push damage through. You win by going wide with hard-to-block creatures and snowballing combat damage, often topped off with an overrun or commander-damage kill.

Strengths

  • Cheap (2 MV) commander you can recast easily and that scales hard in the late game.
  • Menace plus the activated ability make your attackers genuinely hard to block in multiplayer.
  • Mono-black gives deep tribal support, recursion, and reliable removal/tutors.
  • Strong synergy with Rogue mill payoffs and Snake/Rogue tribal lords.

Weaknesses

  • Glass-cannon aggro: a single board wipe sets you back hard.
  • Relies on Butch staying alive to deal big chunks; he's a removal magnet.
  • Mono-black struggles with persistent enchantments and big flyers.
  • Pip-into-one-color combat plan can stall against go-wide blockers despite menace.

Key Cards

  • Notion Thief — A Rogue that punishes opponents' card draw and helps refill your hand off black wheel effects.
  • Soaring Seacliff — Cheap mono-black wants efficient lands; lords and Rogue payoffs matter more—prioritize tribal anthems instead.
  • Coat of Arms — A powerful anthem when your board is full of Rogues and Snakes Butch can also create via his typing ability.
  • Anowon, the Ruin Thief — Rogue payoff that mills opponents and draws you cards every time your Rogues connect.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your cheap, expendable Rogue tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.
  • Coastal Piracy — Off-color, skip—instead lean on black draw like Nadir Kraken alternatives and Reconnaissance-style evasion.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient mono-black tutors and recursion (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent, Liliana's Standard Bearer) to find lords and protect your board against wraths. Layer in anthems and evasion enablers (Coat of Arms, Cover of Darkness, Whispersilk Cloak on Butch) plus a sacrifice/aristocrat package for resilience. Tighten the curve with cheap evasive Rogues and Skullclamp to never run out of gas.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide, menace-laden Rogue/Snake swarm dealing lethal combat damage.
  • ▸Butch himself connecting for huge, unblockable commander damage.
  • ▸Aristocrats drain (Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat) as creatures trade and sacrifice.
  • ▸Rogue mill via Anowon-style payoffs decking out the table.

Archetypes

  • Rogue/Snake Tribal Aggro — Butch directly rewards a wide board of Rogues and Snakes with explosive attack triggers.
  • Aristocrats — Cheap Rogue tokens feed sacrifice engines and drain effects when attacks stall.
  • Voltron/Commander Damage — With enough creatures, Butch grows large and unblockable via menace for fast commander-damage kills.
  • Mill (Rogue subtheme) — Anowon and Soaratami-style Rogue mill payoffs convert evasive damage into card advantage and a secondary win.
