The Commander

Haste

When Casey Jones enters, look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal an artifact card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Guide

Gameplan

A cheap, hasty mono-red artifact commander that digs four deep for an artifact every time it enters. Cast it early, swing, and rebuild your board through artifact synergies, blink/recast loops, and equipment-fueled aggression to grind out card advantage that red usually lacks. You win by going wide or tall with artifact-powered beaters while chaining repeated ETB digs to refuel.

Strengths

  • Two-mana haste body that immediately impacts the board and dodges sorcery-speed removal windows.
  • Built-in card advantage in mono-red—rare and valuable for the color.
  • Cheap commander tax makes recasting after death very forgiving for repeated artifact dig.
  • Slots into the broader artifact/equipment package that mono-red supports well.

Weaknesses

  • Dig is random and only hits artifacts, so it whiffs if the top four lack one.
  • Mono-red lacks blue/black tutoring and recursion, limiting consistency and resilience.
  • No evasion or protection beyond haste—he dies to any spot removal or chump blocks.
  • Color identity caps interaction; very little instant-speed answers to wraths or combos.

Key Cards

  • Goblin Welder — Recurs and cheats artifacts in and out, abusing repeated value and dodging removal.
  • Inventors' Fair — Tutors any artifact and gains life, smoothing out an artifact-centric build.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Equipment that gives evasion, untaps lands for explosive turns, and disrupts opponents.
  • Daretti, Scrap Savant — Repeatable artifact reanimation and card filtering that fits the theme perfectly.
  • Kuldotha Forgemaster — Sacrifices artifacts to tutor your biggest bombs directly onto the battlefield.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns each artifact entering into direct damage, enabling an alternate burn-out finish.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and a strong artifact ramp suite to deploy threats ahead of curve and recast Casey freely. Lean into a combo or burn finish—Reckless Fireweaver plus cheap artifact loops, or a Goblin Welder/Daretti engine recurring big payoffs—so you're not relying solely on combat. Tighten the curve with efficient interaction (Dockside, Chaos Warp, Pyroblast effects) and high-impact equipment to convert his card advantage into reliable closing power.

Archetypes

  • Artifacts — His ETB dig and color reward you for flooding the board with artifacts and equipment.
  • Voltron/Equipment — Haste plus cheap recast lets you suit him up and attack immediately, refueling each cast.
  • Blink/Recast value — Cheap commander tax and flicker effects repeat the four-card artifact dig for steady card flow.
  • Aggro — A two-mana hasty Berserker enables a fast, artifact-boosted red beatdown plan.
