BuildCard details

The Commander

When Casey Jones enters, draw three cards. At the beginning of your next upkeep, discard three cards at random.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Casey Jones for a Tymna-style burst of three cards, then dump your hand into spells, lands, and discard payoffs before your next upkeep forces a random pitch of three. You leverage the raw card flow in mono-red—an unusual color for repeated draw—to fuel an aggressive board or a burn-heavy game and recast/reanimate Casey for more advantage.

Strengths

  • Rare, repeatable card advantage in mono-red, a color starved for draw
  • Cheap 3-mana body that refills your hand the moment it lands
  • Pairs naturally with madness and 'discard matters' payoffs, turning the downside into upside
  • Easy to recast after removal for another draw-three burst

Weaknesses

  • Random discard at your upkeep can pitch your best card if you don't empty your hand
  • Mono-red lacks reliable graveyard recursion to recover discarded gas
  • No built-in evasion or protection; it's a vanilla 3-drop without its ability
  • Reliant on you having outlets to play cards before the discard trigger

Key Cards

  • Containment Construct — Lets you play the three cards discarded at random, completely flipping the drawback into value.
  • Fiery Temper — Madness payoff that you'd happily 'discard' for a cheap Lightning Bolt.
  • Currency Converter — A discard outlet that draws, letting you proactively ditch your hand before the random discard hits.
  • Faithless Looting — Cheap card filtering that synergizes with emptying and refilling your hand.
  • Skullclamp — Turns the aggressive token/creature plan into a relentless draw engine alongside Casey.

Upgrade Path

Lean into discard payoffs (Containment Construct, Bone Picker substitutes, madness spells) and proactive outlets so the random discard never costs you tempo. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana rocks) and recursion-light blink effects to re-trigger the ETB, plus efficient finishers like Torbran or an Impact Tremors/Purphoros engine. Tighten the curve so you can empty your hand each turn, converting Casey's drawback into a one-sided card advantage machine.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aggressive creature beatdown backed by card advantage
  • ▸Direct damage and burn spells to the face
  • ▸Outvaluing the table until you overwhelm with sheer card flow
  • ▸Recast Casey loops generating enough resources to bury opponents

Archetypes

  • Aggro — The constant card flow keeps a wide red board fueled with threats and burn to close fast.
  • Spellslinger/Burn — Drawing three each cast keeps the gas flowing for a deck of cheap red spells and direct damage.
  • Madness/Discard — The forced random discard becomes pure upside with madness cards and graveyard payoffs.
  • Blink/Recursion — Flicker and recast effects let you re-trigger the draw-three repeatedly.
