BuildCard details

The Commander

During your turn, as long as Cloud is equipped, it has double strike and indestructible. (This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage. Damage and effects that say "destroy" don't destroy this creature.)

Equip abilities you activate that target Cloud cost {2} less to activate.

Guide

Gameplan

Cloud is a dedicated Boros equipment Voltron commander: suit him up with cheap equipment, swing for double-strike commander damage, and close games fast. On your turn he's effectively unkillable while equipped (double strike + indestructible), so you protect the rest of your gameplan around keeping equipment attached and getting through. Each turn you deploy gear, reduce equip costs by {2}, and reattach as needed to push lethal.

Strengths

  • Built-in double strike makes commander damage (21) trivially reachable—often two connections.
  • Turn-cycle indestructibility shrugs off board wipes and most removal during combat.
  • The {2}-off equip discount lets you move multiple equipments per turn for cheap, enabling explosive reconfiguring.
  • Cheap to recast and immediately threatening, keeping pressure consistent across the game.

Weaknesses

  • Classic Voltron fragility: exile, bounce, -X/-X, and 'can't attack/block' effects ignore indestructibility.
  • Indestructible and double strike only apply on YOUR turn, so he's vulnerable to removal during opponents' turns once equipment comes off.
  • If unequipped, he loses both keywords—gear-hate like Vandalblast or disenchant effects sets you back hard.
  • Tends toward a single-threat strategy that folds to repeatable blockers, fogs, and pillowfort.

Key Cards

  • Colossus Hammer — Cheap equip turns Cloud into a one-shot kill with double strike, and the discount slashes its hefty equip cost.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection and untapping lands lets you re-equip aggressively while dodging two colors of removal.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof plus haste covers his off-turn vulnerability and lets him swing the turn he lands.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Flash and free attach for equipment lets you suit up at instant speed and respond to removal.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equips with metalcraft combined with the discount enable absurd repositioning and card draw.
  • Lightning Greaves — Shroud and haste for zero equip cost protect Cloud the moment he hits play.
  • Open the Armory — Tutors whichever equipment closes the game, whether Colossus Hammer or a Sword.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention) and evasion (Whispersilk Cloak, trample sources) so Cloud actually connects and survives off-turn. Add fast equip enablers like Sigarda's Aid, Puresteel Paladin, and Stoneforge Mystic plus tutors (Steelshaper's Gift, Open the Armory) to assemble lethal faster. Round out with rituals/ramp and a backup plan such as anthems or a second beater to hedge against single-target removal.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting twice with a Colossus Hammer or Sword for 21+ commander damage.
  • ▸Stacking pump/protection swords and swinging for lethal double-strike trample.
  • ▸Going wide with token support plus an Anthem while Cloud forces damage through.

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Double strike and indestructibility make Cloud the ideal single-creature beatdown threat for commander damage.
  • Equipment Aggro — His equip-cost reduction rewards a dense equipment package and rapid suiting up.
  • Boros Aggro — Low curve plus haste and protection enablers let you race the table out of RW.
