BuildCard details

The Commander

Sneak {W}{B}

Attacking Ninjas you control have deathtouch.

Whenever Dark Leo & Shredder deal combat damage to a player, create a 1/1 black Ninja creature token. Then if you control five or more Ninjas, that player loses half their life, rounded up.

Guide

Gameplan

You're a BW Ninja tribal aggro-combo deck that swings with evasive bodies, returns them to hand, and uses Sneak/ninjutsu to drop Dark Leo & Shredder onto the battlefield connecting for free. Every hit makes a Ninja token, snowballing your board toward the magic number of five Ninjas, at which point each commander connection halves an opponent's life total. With deathtouch on your attackers, you also dominate combat and force damage through.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, exponential life-halving turns Dark Leo & Shredder into a fast clock that ignores high life totals
  • Deathtouch on all attacking Ninjas makes blocking suicidal and trades up against big creatures
  • Sneak/ninjutsu lets you swap evasive attackers for the commander without paying full mana or exposing it to sorcery-speed removal
  • Low mana value (2) means cheap recasts and quick recovery after a board wipe
  • Token generation off combat damage fuels both the Ninja count and aristocrats/sacrifice synergies

Weaknesses

  • Heavily creature- and combat-dependent, so wraths and Fog effects set you back hard
  • Needs unblocked attackers to enable Sneak; a single big blocker or flyer wall slows the engine
  • The half-life kicker requires five Ninjas, which can be fragile to spot removal and edicts
  • Two colors limits access to powerful ramp and broad interaction compared to three-plus color decks
  • Relies on the commander connecting, making it vulnerable to pillow-fort and combat-stax pieces

Key Cards

  • Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow — Premier Ninja payoff and additional ninjutsu enabler, though it's outside BW—use functionally similar BW Ninja support instead.
  • Silent-Blade Oni — A high-impact Ninja that ninjutsus in to steal cards and helps push toward five Ninjas.
  • Cover of Darkness — Grants fear to your Ninjas, making them reliably unblockable so combat damage triggers keep firing.
  • Coastal Piracy — Card-advantage engine that draws whenever your evasive Ninjas connect, refueling the aggro plan.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your combat-damage Ninja tokens, rocketing you to the five-Ninja threshold.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your stream of 1/1 Ninja tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.

Upgrade Path

Add unblockable/evasion enablers (Whispersilk Cloak, Cover of Darkness, Rogue's Passage) so the commander and Ninjas connect every turn, and token doublers to hit five Ninjas faster. Tighten the mana base with efficient BW dual lands, fast mana, and cheap protection like Swiftfoot Boots to keep the commander alive. Round out with strong tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) and a few aristocrat payoffs to convert excess tokens into a backup win when combat stalls.

Archetypes
