The Commander

Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, you get an experience counter.

{1}{W}{B}: Create a white and black Spirit enchantment creature token. It has "This creature's power and toughness are each equal to the number of experience counters you have."

Guide

Gameplan

Daxos the Returned is an enchantment-matters commander that snowballs experience counters every time you cast an enchantment, then converts that count into an army of scaling Spirit tokens via his {1}{W}{B} activation. You ramp into a flood of cheap enchantments, build a high experience total, and pump out tokens that all grow as your counter pile climbs. Late game, a single activation can drop a lethal Spirit while the rest of your board keeps pace.

Strengths

  • Experience counters are permanent and survive Daxos dying, so removal barely slows you down
  • Spirit tokens scale infinitely with no ceiling, making one activation a real threat
  • Deep, redundant enchantment payoffs in BW (constellation, theft auras, enchantress effects)
  • Strong recursion and lifegain tools keep the engine resilient in grindy games

Weaknesses

  • Slow start: early experience counters mean tiny tokens until you build up
  • Mana-hungry — you want to cast enchantments AND repeatedly pay {1}{W}{B}
  • Board wipes can erase your Spirit army (though counters remain)
  • No built-in card advantage in the command zone; relies on enchantress effects in the 99
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and enchantment removal like Back to Nature

Key Cards

  • Eidolon of Blossoms — Constellation card draw refuels your hand every enchantment you play, fueling more experience.
  • Sphere of Safety — Taxes attackers based on your enchantment count, protecting you while your Spirits grow.
  • Doom Foretold — Powerful repeatable sacrifice engine that triggers experience and grinds opponents to nothing.
  • Starfield of Nyx — Turns your enchantments into a creature army and recurs them from the graveyard each upkeep.
  • Sigil of the Empty Throne — Makes 4/4 flying Angels alongside Spirits every time you cast an enchantment.
  • Smothering Tithe — Generates Treasure to power both enchantment casting and repeated Daxos activations.
  • Ghostly Prison — Cheap enchantment that buys time, adds experience, and stacks with Sphere of Safety.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and Treasure (Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) so you can both cast enchantments and activate Daxos in the same turn. Lean harder into enchantress draw (Eidolon of Blossoms, Setessan Champion, Enchantress's Presence) to never run out of gas, and add protection like Greater Auramancy and Teferi's Protection. For a sharper win, include sacrifice loops or Felidar Sovereign/Approach-style finishers, plus recursion such as Sun Titan and Hall of Heliod's Generosity to rebuild after wipes.

  • Celestial Ancient

  • Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts

Win Conditions

  • ▸Activate Daxos repeatedly to swarm with ever-growing Spirit tokens for lethal damage
  • ▸Anthem and overrun effects turning a wide enchantment-token board into one big alpha strike
  • ▸Drain and lifeloss engines (Aristocrats sacrifice loops, Sanguine Bond-style payoffs)
  • ▸Grinding opponents out of resources with Doom Foretold and recursive enchantment value

Archetypes

  • Enchantress — His experience trigger rewards casting cheap enchantments, pairing perfectly with constellation and enchantress draw engines.
  • Tokens — His activated ability churns out scaling Spirit creatures that benefit from anthems and go-wide payoffs.
  • Aristocrats — Spirit tokens and sacrifice enchantments like Doom Foretold and Vampiric Rites feed drain and grind value.
  • Stax — Pillow-fort and tax enchantments (Sphere of Safety, Propaganda, Smothering Tithe) protect you while you grind out experience.
