The Commander

Lifelink

Cards in graveyards can't be the targets of spells or abilities.

Disturb {2}{W}{U} (You may cast this card from your graveyard transformed for its disturb cost.)

Flying

Whenever one or more creature cards are put into graveyards from anywhere, investigate. This ability triggers only once each turn. (Create a Clue token. It's an artifact with "{2}, Sacrifice this token: Draw a card.")

If Dennick would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Dennick is a cheap UW value engine that turns creature deaths into Clue tokens, fueling card advantage while you grind out the game with lifelink and graveyard hate. You deploy Dennick early, churn through Clues for cards and artifact synergies, and close out with incremental value, fliers, or an artifact/token payoff. Disturb lets him recur as a flier even after dying, so he's hard to permanently remove.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander with built-in recursion via Disturb and self-exile, making him resilient and cheap to recast.
  • Passive Clue generation rewards aristocrats-style boards and gives steady card advantage in colors that traditionally lack it.
  • Lifelink front side and flying back side both contribute to the board while the graveyard-hate clause hoses reanimator and graveyard combo decks.
  • Clue tokens synergize beautifully with artifact-matters and sacrifice payoffs.

Weaknesses

  • Investigate only triggers once per turn, so card advantage is slow and not explosive.
  • No innate way to win on his own; needs the deck to provide closers.
  • Graveyard-can't-be-targeted clause can backfire on your own recursion spells like reanimation or flashback targeting.
  • Vulnerable to exile-based removal that bypasses Disturb, and Clue value is mana-intensive (2 to crack each).

Key Cards

  • Academy Manufactor — Triples Dennick's Clue output into Clues, Treasures, and Food for explosive value.
  • The Ozolith — Banks counters but more importantly pairs with sacrifice loops; better is artifact payoffs that love a steady Clue stream.
  • Reckoner Bankbuster — Adds another reliable artifact-token and card-draw engine that meshes with Clue and Treasure themes.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every Clue and token Dennick and the deck produce.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Supports an equipment/artifact build and lets you flash in gear, though Clue payoffs are the core.
  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — Converts Clues and artifacts into mana for explosive turns and combos.

Upgrade Path

Lean into artifact-token doublers (Anointed Procession, Academy Manufactor, Mirkwood Bats) and efficient sacrifice outlets to convert Clues and creatures into a real engine. Add strong UW interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift) and fast mana rocks to keep the two-mana commander ahead on tempo. Finally, pick a dedicated closer—an artifact combo, a token overrun, or an Aetherflux/Approach-style payoff—so your value engine actually ends games.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grinding out incremental card advantage and finishing with evasive fliers including Disturbed Dennick.
  • ▸Token swarms amplified by Anointed Procession plus an anthem or overrun effect.
  • ▸Artifact combo lines using Krark-Clan Ironworks, Academy Manufactor, and sacrifice loops.
  • ▸Lifelink-fueled stabilization into a slow control finish or a payoff like Aetherflux Reservoir.

Archetypes

  • Artifacts / Clues Matter — Dennick passively generates Clues that fuel artifact synergies, sacrifice outlets, and improvise/affinity payoffs.
  • Aristocrats — Creature deaths both trigger Investigate and feed sacrifice engines, turning a dying board into card advantage.
  • Value Control — Lifelink, fliers, card draw, and graveyard hate let you grind opponents out in a controlling UW shell.
  • Blink / Tokens — Token doublers and recursion stack with steady Clue production for a wide, resilient board.

Combos

  • Infinite Reflection + Composite Golem + Dennick, Pious Apprentice // Dennick, Pious Apparition

→ Infinite black mana, Infinite death triggers, Infinite ETB
