BuildCard details

The Commander

As long as you have one or fewer cards in hand, Djeru and Hazoret has vigilance and haste.

Whenever Djeru and Hazoret attacks, look at the top six cards of your library. You may exile a legendary creature card from among them. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. Until end of turn, you may cast the exiled card without paying its mana cost.

Guide

Gameplan

Empty your hand to turn Djeru and Hazoret into a hasty, vigilant 5-mana attacker, then swing each turn to dig six deep and free-cast a legendary creature. You snowball board presence with cheated-in legends while staying lean on cards in hand, closing games with a wide or tall army of powerful Gods and bombs.

Strengths

  • Built-in haste and vigilance once your hand is low, letting it attack the turn it lands and still block
  • Free-casting a legendary creature every combat generates huge tempo and card advantage in a legend-heavy build
  • Boros aggro core with constant attack triggers pressures the table fast
  • Rewards an aggressive, dump-your-hand playstyle that mono-attrition decks struggle to keep pace with

Weaknesses

  • Trigger only hits legendary creatures, so a thin legend count produces frequent whiffs
  • Wants you to empty your hand, which conflicts with holding interaction and leaves you topdecking
  • Boros has weak ramp and card draw, so flooding the board after a wipe is rough
  • Removal-bait commander; if it dies repeatedly the engine stalls and tax climbs
  • Needs to connect in combat to do anything, so fogs, blockers, and pillowfort slow it down

Key Cards

  • Kytheon, Hero of Akros — Cheap legendary creature that flips into a planeswalker and is a great hit off the attack trigger.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles tokens from cheated-in legends and Boros token makers to build a lethal board.
  • Sunforger — Tutors instant-speed answers and protection while you stay low on cards in hand.
  • Cavalier of Dawn — High-impact legendary-adjacent bomb to free-cast; pair with abundant legendary creatures to maximize hits.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets Djeru attack safely every turn to fire the trigger without combat risk.
  • Smothering Tithe — One of Boros's few strong ramp/advantage engines to refuel an empty hand.

Upgrade Path

Raise your legendary creature density toward 20+ so the attack trigger almost never whiffs, prioritizing impactful ETBs and cheap bodies. Add evasion and protection like Reconnaissance, Robe of the Archmagi, and Swiftfoot Boots to ensure combat connects, and shore up Boros's weaknesses with fast mana (Smothering Tithe, signets) and recursion. Tighten the curve so emptying your hand happens by turn four or five, keeping the haste/vigilance clause active.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with Djeru and Hazoret plus a board of free-cast legendary creatures
  • ▸Go wide with tokens and finish through an anthem or overrun effect
  • ▸Assemble a Voltron threat with Sunforger equipment and protection
  • ▸Cheat out a high-impact legendary bomb to dominate the board and grind opponents out

Archetypes

  • Legends Tribal — The attack trigger only cheats out legendary creatures, so a dense legend count maximizes free casts.
  • Aggro / Voltron — Hasty vigilant body with an empty-hand condition pushes a fast, attack-centric beatdown plan.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Boros token makers plus Anointed Procession turn free-cast legends and attacks into an overwhelming board.
  • Blink / Value — Flicker effects re-trigger ETBs on cheated-in legendary creatures for repeatable advantage.
